With due credit to the BBC Radio Four’s superb program, “Desert Island Disks”, I ask fellow Nepalis here, if you were to be stranded alone in a desert island for one week and you were allowed to take just two music tracks, one nepali and one non-Nepali, to accompany your solitude, what would you take? Yes, the rule is: just one Nepali song and one non-Nepali song. Not albums. You’ll realize what a tough choice this is, but note that these need not be your all time favorites. All right, let’s sample our diverse musical tastes. My choice: Nepali: Yesai gari bitai dinchhu, by Narayan Gopal. Non-Nepali: Sweetest Thing, by U2.

Paschim, Euta matra geet le ta marigaye hudaina. At least , three Nepali songs I like in the following order, 1. Phula Ko Thungaa Bahera Gayo Gangaako Paanimaa Kahile Bheta Holaa He Daajai Yo Jindagaani maa (Tara Devi) 2. Timi Deu Yaa Nadeu Timro Maayaa Maile Man Timilaai Diyi Saken. (Narayan Gopal , Mira Rana) 3. Saalko paata Tapari Gaasera, Ber Bho Maaya Jaau Daadaa Kaatera. (Tirtha Kumaari. And believe, I listened to this song almost in island like road trip, from Washington DC to Rapid City, South Dakota!!) Non-Nepali : Meimei ni zuo chuantou, ge ge zai an shang zou (A chinese folk song) And whoever objected to calling sister/brother, this song is a reply. This is a love song, and its literal meaning is (bahini, timi dungaa chadha, ma daai kinaar kinaar dagurchhu.. bahini bhannaale oohi still FOSLA premikaa kya..)

Biswo et al., that's exactly the point. What would you choose if you were to choose *just* two songs. No albums, not more than two songs. Just two. One nepali, one non-nepali. Don't say I'll choose one of many. Choose two. And name the songs. The point is to force you to make that painful choice. Try, it's fun. I myself struggled for 30 minutes to decide among some 20 NG and U2 classics. In the end, really struggled to choose between NG's "timilai bhoolda ma eklo bhayechhu" and "yesai gari bitai dinchhu". I chose the latter most reluctantly. Similarly, I like most U2 songs, and some from their latest "All that you can't take behind" are great too. But in the end, I settled for their old number,"sweetest thing". It's very short, just under 3 minutes, but I find that it captures my mood well, and the angst. Let's continue...am curious to hear what Sajhaites listen to.

Hi everyone, There is this song in "Jhuma" nepali movie,"Birano thanu.....i do not remember the lyrics but i would choose that song and non-nepali would be "when u wanted to go there is no easy way out" by celon dion (i am not sure if that's the right spelling....but i am sure u guys will understand what i am talking about) because i get inspired every time i hear this song(not the nepali tho)....so it will not let my hope die to be back with my family and friends. One more thing, what's up with this dude Paramendra? Why do u feel the need to post your pic. every time u write in Shaja......i mean what's the point? It just i found it weird. Cheeers

The topic of this thread reminds me of the opening paragraph of Nick Hornby's damn good novel (late made into a movie starring John Cusack): "High Fidelity". That said, my choices: Nepali: "Yati chokho yati mitho Diula timi.lai maya bir.sa.nay chan saraa.lay poorana prem ka katha" (sung by Narayan Gopal) ****** Non-Nepali Song: "What I am" From the album: "Shooting rubberbands at the stars" By: Edie Brickell and the new bohemians. oohi ashu ktm, nepal

Last night I went to see Don Giovanni. Weirdly enough they sang in English!! Can you imagine? The good thing was I could undestand but not many die hard opera fan did not like it, including my husband. My head is filled with mozart but this is what I would take with me: My first is 'Yeti Choko Yeti Mitho' by Narayan Gopal. [my early memory of my brother consists of him singing this song in his beautiful voice] [There must be other Nepali singers and songs but I don't listen to anyother except Naryan Gopal. Narayan Gopal is it for me. Now, don't laugh!!] Second: Vergnuegen und Lust [Bach. Arias for Soprano and Violin] [The album I have is Orchestra of St. Luke's with Kathleen Battle and Itzak Perlman]

Bela belako kura ho. If you asked me the same question every two years, my answers would be different each time. My choice of non-nepali songs is more or less the same, from Mahendra Kapoor and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. I have different choice in Nepali songs/singers, ranging from Narayan Gopal to Hari Bansa Acharya and Aruna Lama to Sharmila Bardewa. My choice at this moment is: Nepali: "Har Rat Sapani ma Eithan Hunchha.. Gauna Shayad pahiro gayoki....." - Deep Shrestha Non-Nepali: "Na Muh Chhupake Jiyo. Aur na Shar Jhukake Jiyo... Gamon ka sagar bhi aaye to muskurate jiyo..............." - Mahendra Kapoor ??!

Yea, I never knew you were jealous of these two happy days I am spending now and want to make it like other 363 days:-) Like ??!ji said, it depends on when you ask. Today is different from yesterday, so I change my foreign selection, and revert back to one of my old favorites. Nepali: Phool ko thunga bahera gayo Gangako paanimaa Foreign:Despite my scant knowledge of English song, In my college I once liked this very much: " I am not an actor I am not a star I don't even have my own car But I am hoping so much you will stay That you will love me anyway." One week and only two choices? that's tough Paschim. I'd rather sing to myself than just take two but then my vocal cord would stop working by the time I come home and the very first thing i'd end up doing would be visiting the ENT specialist who I know would advise me to stop talking (believe me the one I went to in Nepal literally asked me stop saying a word! thank god i haven't had to go to another one) Therefore with proper digging and searching, I came up with these two. Nepali: (Usha Mangeshkar) Jhaljhali aankha ma jhaljhali aankha ma kasto basyo maya preeti sakdina ma birsana timrai ho yo lajau jobana Non Nepali: (Bob Dylan) My love she speaks like silence without ideals or violence she doesn't have to say she's faithful yet she's true like ice like fire people carry roses make promises by the hours my love she laughs like the flowers valentines can't buy her some speak of the future my love she speaks softly she knows there's no success like failure and then failure's no success at all

and of course when you're on a deserted island, there would be melancholy in the whole atmosphere so i'd sing to myself what Barbara Streisand sang to Robert Redford in the Way we were: Memories, like the corners of my mind Misty watercolor memories Of the way we were Scattered Pictures of the smiles we left behind Smiles we gave to one another for the way we were

All right here are my choices. I’ll take Narayan Gopal’s ‘Samhaala ghumto.haru Sajaaoo kasha.haru’ and that ‘Ain’t No Sunshine when she’s gone’ sung by any singer. With ‘Samhaala ghumto.haru’, the most romantic song sung by the most fitting and unusually intoxicating passionate voice of NG, can spend not only a week but a month alone in any island. I am never tired of listening this song. Every time it fills me with hope, passion, purpose and energy of life- a pure and complete youth. ‘Ain’t no sunshime’, does it need explanation ? Some may ask if it isn’t a bit sad for a lonesome week in an island. Well, depends on what you listen in this song. I hear a discovery of something in this song. And the melody, so sweet and sad, worth living privately in an island with.

"...if you were to be stranded alone in a desert island for one week..." We are stranded in the desert and if we start thinking about Ganga ko paani(like Biswo), chokho mitho maya and other romance (like Ashu, NK, Nepe et al.), then the situation will definitely aggravate and may lead to insanity: Remember: Akas ko phal ankha tari mar. So I would choose those songs which would convince me that the desert is not so bad: the Nepali song/poem that does this is: Sansarrupi sukh swarga bhitra (By Devkota) - If everything is ultimately like desert, then the real desert is not that bad.So keep fooling yourself at least for a week. In English, Hotel California: "On a dark desert highway..." You see, deserts are everywhere, so imagine your are at HC. It gotta help. How about book? What would you take? Myself - Walden by H.D.T.

NK dear, no you ain't bending any rule here. Choices...from songs to honeymoon destinations to bottles of wine to (wo)men...it's tough, no? As Paramendra Kumar Bhagat would say (with no hint of narcissism, but with a full color photograph) - admit it :) Good songs are being named...Dilasha's nepali song reminded me of my past favorite. That jhaljhali ankha is a great number by Usha. i wonder if she ever sang any other nepali song...she might have sung in that old movie, Bansuri (The Flute), but i'm not sure...also I have a feeling that women like "jhaljhali..." more than men. What do you say Dilasha? And of course you can't go wrong with Nepe's poetic tastes. Yes, NG's "samhalha ghumto haru"...rather slow, but i did think of it together with Bhupi's lyrics "aljhecha kyare pacchyauri". But again, the tough part here is to decide which ONE song you are taking. Thanks others for sharing your choice. I initially thought JN's "galti hajar" was by Bhaktaraj Acharya, but on second thoughts, it is by NG. NG just rules, eh?

I don't see why men can't or won't sing "jhaljhali" Paschim. I'd say they would sing it even more especially when they're trying to woo the women (of their dreams) well perhaps not the exact lines but something like: jhaljhali aankha ma jhaljhali aankha ma kasto basyo maya preeti ma pani kahan birsanchu timi auchau bhandai din ganchu :-)

It was always a hard time finishing that movie. And even knowing all that , I still had to go watch it couple of times in those video days in KTM. Note here the spelling of Rafi's first name. The other form would be Mohammed but Ialways found Rafi's first name spelt this way.

Nepali - "Ma maunta ma aljhi raheko euta jeewan Kahan jaane? kaslai sodhne? kaslai khojne ho? ma aashai aashma aljhi raheko euta jeewan........." I believe the lyrics are timeless. And doesn't it contemplate to the desert island? :) 2. English - "Hungerstrike" by Temple of the Dog. "I don't mind stealing bread From the mouths of decadence But I can't feed on the powerless When my cup's already overfilled But it's on the table The fire is cooking And their farming babies While the slaves are working The blood is on the table And their mouths are choking But I'm growing hungry" Keep rocking in the free world (desert island?).........:):)
