Just wanted to take a moment to point sajha visitors to the "Our Differences" discussion usergroup in sajha.

We have had to create this usergroup in order to classify some discussion topics as being nothing more than our differences. These topics mostly deteriorates into hot headed arguments and then further into intolerant, foul and indecent language.

It is the aim of sajha to bring together our diverse caste, clan, languages under one all inclusive tolerant society where we respect our differences yet come together as one Nepali family.

Sometimes this can be tough because it's easy to give a piece of ones mind under an anonymous name. In a way, this ability to express one's pent up anger and frustration is good. But too much of it begins to undermine the well being of the whole group. Deleting threads like that would be a easy way out but it does not mean that these things don't exist in our Nepali society.

More and more I have realized that Sajha is some kind of a virtual snapshot of our Nepali society. In real interactions it would not be feasible for everyone to express what they want regarding such caste issues hence in order to give space to these kind of real issues, I have created a discussion group called "Our Differences" where interested people can continue to discuss these issues, without making these the main discussions appearing on the front page of sajha.

Threads like these are not considered to be moved into the "Our Differences" group, until and unless this kind of discussion gets prolonged and continues for over a week. After that, these are moved over. You can access these and continue the discussions if you are interested in this location - http://www.sajha.com/sajha/html/openforum.cfm?forum=131

Let us join our hands and minds for more tolerant, respectful and positive discussions and interactions among us.

Best wishes,
San

Banning of users promoting caste discrimination and hatred

In looking at the IP address of few users involved in promoting racial (caste) hatred in sajha, it has come to our attention that the three users

leo_r
sachokura
ilovenepal

share the same IP address and are obviously abusing the freely available sajha resource to promote their racist propaganda.

As I have outlined in the above message, I let few threads on sajha about these subjects alone for few days. But even after a week or so if this kind of negative discussions continue, then all these kinds of discussions flourishing on the main kurakani section gets moved to the OUR DIFFERENCES usergroup.

This person using same IP address but different usernames has collectively(?) accused me of being a Newar and using sajha platform for Newar cause.

Personally I find these caste differences so trivial and non-issue because I have been lucky to be blessed with the company of people from all castes and divisions and I have always had a relationship with everyone based on humanity, interpersonal relationship and common sense of etiquette rather than the outdated, unfair and illogical segregation of people according to their birth.

Unfortunately caste is a big issue for many people and I respect that feeling as long as it is not used against someone to inflict negative feelings towards a certain group of people based upon their birth in a certain family.

I believe that caste was a tool for rulers to divide the people and rule. Caste also creates hierarchy in a society with some castes on a higher social hierarchy than other. This has lead to the thinking that people from certain castes are better human beings than others. This is seen in the untouchable tradition that exists in our society where some castes don't eat things touched by another caste.

In today's day and age the social and personal hierarchy provided by the caste system is does not make any logical sense, and anyone who deep inside believes that they are higher or better form of human being because they were born in a certain caste needs to seriously get adapted to the new age. Today, you are what you are according to what you have personally achieved. According to the lasting impression that you leave with others that you come in contact with. According to what you do for society and humanity.

Our country is struggling to become a democratic society, and in choosing to follow or encourage this segregation of caste, we are slowing the democratization process. I certainly hope that the new government realizes that and discourages such caste discrimination.

If you or anyone you know has a strong feelings towards the caste system, I don't blame you. This is something that has been subconsciously planted within our mind while living in a society imbibed with such strong caste values. But, that feeling is not right. In the end, we are only human beings. We are only Nepalis. We can choose to survive hand in hand in a positive environment. Or we can choose to believe we are better human beings than others and continue to spread this tradition of segregation.

The choice is ours.

woohoo.....................

When a thread against Bahun was created, something positive did happen! Ne0, do you remember when a pro-Bahun thread was created "Bahun should be the ruler of our country"..........the title itself was not that racist(though it is), the more disturbing were the messages inside that thread......there were so many messages inside that thread that talked dispecable things about other races.... And I humbly and repeatedly requested to you to remove and discourage those kinda threads............You replied to me......"instead of thinking that way.......why don't you also reply to the thread and explain your opinions on why you don't agree with the subject."

"Magarni at sex" thread was another disturbing thread.....and many other racist threads like that never even got the right treatment......WHICH WAS TO DELETE THEM AND TO DISCOURAGE/BAN USERS (corresponding IP addresses).
Finally, an anti-bahun thread did that trick!!!

Woohoo..........
This action should have been carried out a LONG TYAM ago......... but again, "der sey aaey, lekin durust aaey"............ way to go!!!!

San,
Because of these hateful threads I had less inclination to visit sajha. Thank you for the rescue!
Kudos!

I agre with san. I don't know why it is so hard for nepali people to accept that we all are equal. No body is superior and nobody is inferior. The cast system needs to be abolished. I believe the cast system will soon abolish if it is not today it will be in the future. For the development of our country we need to be united not divided. I think Nepal needs law againsts racisim.

It was getting bit too much, and too much of medicine is poison too, I was nostalgic, so were others.
Are we trying to overlook the problem, escaping to face and confront it, or it is needless low mentality craps that is dividing us and draining our resources to something that will benefit none.

I don't know why this restriction and other things are being imposed now on Sajha. I have been regularly visiting Sajha since a year, and I like the diverse, sometimes very strange topics posted. I wondered why it bothers few people about the discussion on Caste, religion and so forth. Sajha-Admin have done their best to restrict some words technically not suitable for forum, however, the forum is of personal expression and beyond any moderation. Lets differentiate Sajha from other Blogging sites. Nevertheless, one may happen to follow stupid comments on the Blogs' site too.

If somebody expresses nonsense and unuseful items, please just ignore it. Lets appreciate the differences. I myself sometimes like to pseudobehave as extremist to some extent. To my understanding Sajha is not meerly a Specialized group nor any expert forum. By it names, it is a common Chautari from the deligient ideas to stupid threads. There are more than 200 threads sometimes created per day- and more than 400 threads visited and commented per day, I know it is not possible to go through all the threads. Therefore, I can be selectively wise to choose which thread I should go.

I don't understand that why some people don't understand the type of people who simply like to discuss. I have discovered few members in Sajha who simply like to discuss and put opposite argument for the shake of argument only, though the fact might be different. Let's accept that, why not? I don't see any problem that people are expressing their personal view about Caste, Sex, their sexuality and any other thing what people had pointed as stupid.

Sajha should keep-it-up its diversity...... That is what like about Sajha

Hi San,

Thanks a lot for stepping forward and taking action against such prejudice. Racial hatred and degrading each other based on race is absolutely nonsense.

Thanks to the Admin for doing something about the racial slurs seen all over Sajha in past few days/weeks. If we can't find unity among ourselves, then we are digging a hole for ourselves....Be it a Newar, Bahun, Magar or Sarki for that matter. In some threads, I read in a different thread about someone even accusing Hinduism as a racial religion. I think we can be civil and still have a open discussion about these issues. We don't have to agree or follow what other says, but just being receptive to other's ideas and beliefs does not hurt/degrade one's pride. Apparently, some of us have real strong opinion about the other castes but cursing and bitching at eachother will not solve anything. Let us appreciate the differences among us, and grow and prosper together !

San,
Having strict policies are important to maintain the integrity of the site. I understand the importance of free speech that does not mean hatred and racism should be tolerated.

I couldnt agree more that there should be open discussion about the problems in the society that does NOT mean hate and racism should be tolerated.

The beauty of diversity can only be witnessed in the acceptance of different opinions and cultures but not by degrading, humiliating, defamatory and derogatory comments nor by accepting those comments as acceptable part of communication.

Why even wait a week for those hateful threads, to float around? Move them or even better delete them!!

Let me shake your realities. Caste system is here to stay. As long as you have an ability to perceive and process reality you will continue to judge people and that will give rise to a partition mentality. Someone aptly said that "back in the days we used to have caste system, today we have class system."
No matter what you call it, the system to divide the people will find its existence in our society. So all you people who say that you are above this system are mere liars and opportunists. When the opportunity strikes you will show your real color. Think about it.
