Hi Everyone,
Some of the steps in job searching would be as follow:
1. Create a very attractive resume
(this means try to include everything you have done related to your major and the job you are looking for like work experience, course taken, activities you were involved in, scholarships you got, volunteering and extra circular activities) Even after putting these all together - it doe not mean you have a attractive resume, most of us (specially International Students - Nepali) have spent there days being busy working and studying, so for us making a resume becomes a LAST MINUTE DEAL (if lucky maybe during last semester or so or maybe even after graduation). Resume should be well typed, well shown and well decorated (employers take only ONE look and decide whether to read the whole resume and cover letter or not to read)
2. Applying for job SHOULD atleast be started 1 YEAR BEFORE Graduation even if you are not well-qualified for the job you are applying (meaning you dont meet requirement like graduation).
3. BIGGEST and MOST ESSENTIAL thing in resume is the STUDY RELATED EXPERIENCE you have gained (meaning working in gas station or food court does not count- DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT PUTTING YOUR GAS STATION EXPERIENCE IN RESUME - THAT IS SILLY)
4. Make ATLEAST 3 very very very close and caring friend (in this context - friend relates to PROFESSORS, SUPERVISOR, MENTORS - not your room-mate or gas-station friends). This will help you greatly during interviewing phase for recoomendation as well as networking.
5. IT IS NEVER TOO LATE - apply to atleast 50 jobs a day (believe it or not there are more jobs than you think)
6. DON'T exclude any position (meaning apply to jobs even if it requires a higher degree like if it requires Masters and you only have undergrad, JUST APPLY).
7. People on the other end (i.e. employers) are not at all worried as you are. It will atleast take minimum of 1-2 weeks to get reply from the places that you applied. (in the mean time just keep on applying).
8. You will find jobs in the places that you normally dont look. JOB SEARCH WEBSITES ARE NOT THE ONLY PLACE YOU CAN FIND JOBS, look into the particular company's website, university's website that you had heard of or you know about).
9. YOU ALWAYS NEED A COVER LETTER WHEN YOU APPLY FOR THE JOB.
10. YOU CANNOT USE THE SAME COVER LETTER AND STYLE TO APPLY FOR ALL THE JOBS.
11. Change your resume and cover letter style to fit the job description.
If any of you want to me go thru ur resume for refining or redesigning purpose, I will be more than glad to help. mail me at heroboka@hotmail.com
