Haven't seen Nepali Haiku that much in Sajha. So I am starting this thread to encourage the Sajhaites to share their Haikus with all. I think it is generally accepted that the 5-7-5 syllables rule of Japani Haiku is not a must for foreign languages, right ? So, here it goes, freestyle haikus in Nepali. . |

Bhunte the photo master, Some pictures launch a thousand words. Some picture drowns the thousand words. I am unable to decide which one your picture did. Thanks, anyway. ******************* Vivid ji, Its always a pleasure to hear your kind words. I was afraid some people might think the background and all that as a swaang nai besi. Now I feel secure that you liked it. BTW, I hear many people saying that Madhuparka has degraded its literary standard of the past. What do you think ? ******************* Makuro ji, Very impressive ! Great sense of contemporary life and humor too. You said you don't know what Haiku is and wrote wonderful Haikus yourself ! Sajha, since a recent past, has been a treasure of the world-class (my assertion !) Haikus and regular poetry in English. If you have not noticed some of great Haikus in Sajha, start with the following thread, one of the longest threads in Sajha: - http://www.sajha.com/sajha/html/OpenThread.cfm?forum=2&ThreadID=8314 If you want to know more about Haiku, you can always google. For a quick introduction, here is a link: - http://shiki.toward.co.jp/intro.html Here are some excerpts from the above pages: What is Haiku? Haiku is a very short poetic form, consisting of three lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables each, and must have a special word which evokes the season. It is probably the shortest poetic form in the world, and its development is native to Japan, with no influence from either the West or China. The poet must be concise because of the brevity, while concentrating deep spiritual understanding into the poem. The haiku poet usually takes up the changes of nature which have impressed him in order to express the intangible world of the spirit. Example: furuike ya kawazu tobikomu mizu no oto Original Japanese Haiku by MATSUO BASHO (1644 1694) who was one of the leading Haiku master Translation: old pond..... a frog leaps in water's sound - translated by William J. Higginson Into the old pond a frog jumped with a splash -translated by Kimiyo Tanaka One last comment from my side: Traditional Haiku requires a word that describes/symbolizes a season in it. I think this is parallel to the original Ghazal being about romantic emotions, so is a hindrance rather than a facilitator- for freedom of unlimited expression that every modern literary medium should have- if taken in a strict sense. I think the notion of season in Haikus should be broadened to include just about any time. And since everything happens at a certain point of time anyway, the mention of a time may not be important in certain cases. So I would write Haiku without worrying about the season. Nevertheless, the life, a past, the present, a future, death, all are some kind of seasons, no ? Let's keep Haikuing, friends ! |

Nepe ji, Perception afno afno, Prasfutan afno afno, Herne le herchha, Sunne le sunchha, Peena sukdai garchha, Hajur kag jhain, Karauna nachhode hunchha! :)) Actually, I have stopped reading Madhuparka long ago. My brother used to inscribe annually for the Madhuparka, so jhinge taal ma padinthiyo, afno ta khalti ritto hajur kahile kinera padiyena, :( but I loved those abstract backgrounds given to the poems/muktaks/hykus etc in the Madhupark, thought that it added more valuable expressions to the words than words alone could express. Padna chain khub padthen tara bujhna chain uhi taal ho, heh! heh! The last time, I read a Madhupark after a long gap(2yrs ago),and even from my level I have to agree with the rest of the pack. Ma pani jhinge taal ma chhadi halam na, Jingagi, Rangaheen kyanvas, Chyatiyeko! Aatit, Tukriyeko, Aaina. Bartaman, Lagaam binako, Ghoda. Bhavisya, Selaundai ga.ako, Jwalamukhi. Wah wah!!!! Sajha ma HAIKU POET ko pani kami chhaina rahechha&&a very noteworthy thread by Nepe. I have not gone thru this thread b4&.. Thanks to vivid for letting me know. Guys !!!! I am not too good in writing haiku like u all have shared here. Many of u might know haiku whereabouts. Tehi pani, i wanna share smth abt haiku. As we know haiku started from Japan. Issa Kobayashi, a famous haiku poet, born in 1763, and died in 1827. At the age of 13, Issa went to Tokyo (initial name of Tokyo was Edo), to work and, about the age of 25, started to write haiku. After visiting and living at various places in Japan and other Western cities, Issa returned to his home in at the age of 51 and was the leader of the haiku, till he died at the age of 65. Here are few Issas Haiku. >> "Harukaze ya, ushi ni hikarete, zenkooji." The warm spring wind and my cow led me to pay a visit to Zenkoji Temple. >> "Waga hoshi wa doko ni tabine ya ama-no-gawa." In the Summer Evening, Where is My Star Hidden in the Milky Way? >> "Shizukasa ya kosui no soko no kumo no mine." Quiteness---it is the summit of the clouds that can be seen at the bottom of the lake. >> "Semi nakuya ten ni hittsuku chikuma-gawa." On a Summer Day, with Cicadas Chirping, the Chikuma River Looks as Though It Flows Up to Heaven. >> "Yare utsuna hae ga te o suru ashi o suru." Look, don't kill that fly! It is making a prayer to you by rubbing its hands and feet. >> "Ano tsuki o totte kureyo to naku ko kana." The fall moon and a child crying to get it. >> "Kore ga maa tsuino sumika ka yuki goshaku." This is my final dwelling, buried now in five-foot snow. >> "Omou hito no soba ni warikomu kotatsu kana." Trying to sit right next to the person you love, at the warm fireplace. sathiharu, mathi ko ta ISSA le lekheko vayo. Aba ma euta try hanchhu hai. Milyo kee milena yeso feedback paau hai. A capacity crunch Energy cost crunch Credit crunch CALIFORNIA POWER CRISIS. |

It's good to be a learner. The other day, I had a small chat with my Japanese colleague about Haiku. It turns out that most of what we are posting here is actually not Haiku but a very similar genre called Senryu. Haiku and Senryu are structurally identical (three lines with 5-7-5 syllables); the difference lies in the scope of themes. Haiku deals with the nature. Whereas Senryu deals with the human nature. So it includes human emotions, humor, political satire etc. in contrast to Haiku which is more into the business of describing the nature. There is also a third form of short poetry called Tanka originated from Japan. Tanka has five lines in the form of 5-7-5-7-7 syllables. Anyway, it looks like there is a growing tendency to call both Haiku and Sneryu as Haiku. It could be due to ignorance. But to me the dichotomy of Haiku and senryu looked rather artificial. What about the poems which could be both Haiku and Senryu ? There are a lot of similar discussions out there. So I leave it there. To Vivid's awhaan, here are some quick Haikus ... |

San, Why is this thread truncated ? Where did all those postings go ? *********************** Anyway, I just wanted to repost some beautiful Haikus I found in the net for Sajha readers. Here are six Nepali Haikus from Japan. Amazing for their texture, emotions, beauty and for strictly following the 5-7-5 rule. Enjoy ! |

Great poems Nepe ji, I would like to make a suggestion if you don't mind. If you make GIf files of poems insted of JPEG, it probably will display better. Jpeg file is great to display high color images, but in this kind of image with only text I think GIF will be better, You can try and see if you like. Just a suggestion |

What a way to start a gorgeous morning. Haiku, Sanryu or Zen Koan, eloquence has never before been expressed with so few words. I taste each syllable with every sip of my bihani chiya, and as I gaze out of the window, the rising sun slowly seeps into the brilliant sky, matching the perfect combination of the moment! The brilliant Nepe ji, the multi-faceted Gokul ji, the beautiful vivid, eloquence personified Mr. Hem Nath Ghimire ji and our own Nepalithito ji: For those like me, starving and deprived of Nepali Sahitya, you make it worth my while to visit Sajha. Always! |

Thaag ji, I have limited knowledge about these things. I use Photoshop or Photostudio and I don't find options for saving pictures in GIF format. I'll appreciate appropriate pointers. *************************** Hem ji, What a pleasure to have you right here after your beautiful Haikus. Thank you for the link to your page. Wow ! After a long time, I could have a pleasure of reading suswadu Padhya-kabita. You are not only gifted with kabya-chet but also with samaya-chet and kartavya-chet, which I think is an extraordinary and explosive combination. You don't need dynamites to shatter the coldest and hardest rock ! On a different note, do you know Rupak (Dept. Mining) by any chance ? If yes, could you please send me an email ? (To send a mail, just click on my name and then on the icon for mail. ) *************************** Shiva ji, You multiply my pleasure ! Have you had a chance to read Sitara's poetry yet ? I know, I know, everything she writes are poetry in themselves. However, I am talking about the formal poetry of hers. She is a Zen Madhushala personified ! *************************** At the end, I am thankful for having a chance to know amazing people in Sajha and to meet some of them in person on unforgettable occasions. Happy Thanksgiving ! And I am still wondering if San can recover all the old postings of the thread. |
