GAA announces scholarships

KATHMANDU, June 9 (PR) - The Godavari Alumni Association (GAA), an alumni of the former students of St. Xavier’s School, today announced six annual scholarships in the name of late Queen Aishwarya Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah and late Kumar Khadga Bikram Shah.

According to the Alumni, the annual scholarship will be sponsored by GAA to three girls and three boys, all to bright and deserving students in village schools.

"The scholarships are in appreciation and remembrance for their support and help to the GAA," said Fr. Eugene L. Watrin S.J, moderator of GAA during a condolence meeting held today.

"Her Late Majesty Queen Aishwarya inaugurated our GAA Building on December 3, 1983...She also donated two shields for the Aishwarya Shield Spelling Contests and regularly graced the finals during the 27 years that the contest has been running," he further said.

"Likewise, Kumar Khadga Shah was the first President of GAA and a very helpful and interested member ever since", Fr. Watrin added. "He (Kumar Khadga) was very helpful in arranging for Kayur Rana to donate the land for GAA Building...He attended most of our important functions in the past 40 years."

That's right, Diwas. GAA lost two patrons in Queen Aishwarya and Kumar Khadga. Crown Prince Dipendra, too, was very positive towards GAA activities as he had graced our Spelling Contest a number of times as the Chief Guests. So did, Princess Sharada. Less than a year ago, last September, Princess Sharada was the Chief Guest at the Ratna Shield Quiz Contest and these days I keep remembering the moments Princess Sharada and Kumar Shah spent with our organizing committee during tea and snacks.
The mere thought of the fact that so many of our Royal Family members who were so close to GAA were no more with us brought lumps in our throats. May the Royal souls rest in Peace. Amen.

Kudos to the Godavari Alumni Association (GAA) for instituting
the scholarships.

I myself met the late Queen -- very briefly on four occasions -- more than a decade ago through the GAA English Spelling
Contests (as a participant and as an organizer).

The late Kumar Khadga Bikram Shah, brother-in-law of the late King Birendra and a graduate of STX, was "a gem of a person", according to an eulogy published in the Nepali Times.

May his soul rest in peace.
