LONDON: Nepal's Crown Prince Dipendra and Devyani Rani, the girl he loved to distraction, were already married at the time he allegedly shot his father, King Birendra and almost all the royal family, according to Newsweek magazine, which hit the newsstands on Monday. You may call this a rumor, but it is only reprinted here, not my opinion. This came from Newsweek.

Those who know Devyani Rani portray her as a cultured, sophisticated woman with a mind of her own on many matters. This 'mind of her own on many matters' is thought to have gone not too well with the late Queen, among other reasons. Other reasons being: Devyani is also related, from her mother's side, to the Scindias -- a hugely prominent political family in India, with a conservative Hindu bent. Devyani's elder sister is married to an Indian Marwari businessman. Some say that one group close to the Palace was trying its best to get Dipendra marry Devyani; while another group was trying to get him to marry some other Shah girl. And on and on went these shenanigans. Those who know Devyani also say that there was no way she could have married Dipendra in secrecy. Apparently, she has/had too much respect for herself and for her family traditions. As the X-Files promo goes: "The truth is out there." oohi ashu
