Can anyone explain me what is the idea behind fraternities and sororities here in the US? What are these there for ? What do they do ? For some reason I have never appreciated their presence in colleges, although I admit that I do not know much about them to make any comments. What is it that I am missing by not being a "brother" besides an opportunity to booze every weekend?

Fraternities/Sororities are usually present on campus with some sort of social purpose, though the major reason why people join them is that it gives you immediate access to a vast social network. If the fraternity/sorority you join is part of a national network of fraternities, it will open up a network that will benefit you even way after you graduate from college. They do have a reputation of partying hard, but they do their share of charity/social work too (probably just enough to keep their membership).
