Hi Biswo-ji, The movie we have for the First Day First Show at the GAA Hall in Thamel this Saturday is: Ziang Yimou's "Red Sorghum" (1987). It's in Chinese with English subtitles. It's in 16 MM. This way, the movie will be up on a white-wall screen -- in a BIG way!! Both Mahendra Man Shakya and I expect a large turnout (up to 50 people) of GAA members, Martin Chautari friends, and other movie buffs who want to re-discover the magic, the romance, the passion, the thrill, and the excitement of watching some of the best movies from around the world on a big wal-screen in Kathmandu!! We at the Kathmandu Film Archives are especally grateful to: film-journalist Mr. Anup Subedi and a long-time well-wisher Ms. Shizu Upadhyay for providing the final push, and to World Cultural Net's Mr. Deepak Sarkar and Wavetex's Mr. Sudarson Karki for ALL their logistical and technical help in getting this film ready for this Saturday. Building up this institution called the KFA is important. The primary challenge is to attract first-rate Nepalis who can run the show even better long after you are gone!! Thankfully, both the GAA and the Martin Chautari have people who are much smarter than I am, so I need not worry about the future. With the primary challenge thus met, my job now is to seek help from many, use the team members' strengths to the maximum, create conditions for people on the team to be "mini-leaders" on their own, give credits to where they are due, and keep on motivating all to strive for the common goal of getting and showing great movies regularly. It's really that straighforward!! When you think about this, the recipe for building up an institution is actually quite simple and replicable!! It just takes a little of time to all in place. But then, hey, what aspect of life doesn't take time in life to fall in place? Red Sorghum, indeed!! oohi ashu

Ashuji, that's really a great movie. That was the first movie that told me that romance can have several faces. That romance is not monopolized by the handsome boys and cute girls in the beautiful clothes, that romance occurs without singing songs and getting excited. In the bucolic milieu, with ragtag people, there can also exist raging passion, that heart palpates everywhere, that love exists everywhere. The theme of the movie is subtly fabricated, the tempo streaks through the nuances of life, stimulating all the feelings we have from our understanding of life and cumulates into a catharsis of preexisting-but unused, unexplored - feelings of our selves. Enjoy the movie. You are doing great job, sir. Biswo.

Both this GBNC Web site and starting the Movie Club have been pleasant diversions for me from the all the serious Kamaiya work. Thanks again my postings and for your comments. BTW, is it OK if call you just Biswa? Biswa-ji souds too formal. My friends, by te way, just call me Ashu. You can too. Happy Dassain to you and all who are reading this. oohi ashu

Ashu: If I had still been in Ascol, I would have taken being called "ji" as great offense , from some nerd from what you have written "Morang, Bayarban" in one of your previous articles. I'm not a great fan of ji.Either Dr Ashu, or Professor Ashu, or Ashu::That has been normal creed for me for calling somebody. You surely belong to the third.I too. Go ahead.Happy Dashain to you also. Biswo.
