Some Suggestions To The Nepal Digest
Paramendra Bhagat
March 28, 2003

http://www.geocities.com/paramendra/2003/tnd.html

  1. Someone must get a username to be able to post articles and comments.

  2. A piece must be at least 500 words to qualify as an article.

  3. Each article will have a comments section right underneath.

  4. Each username will have a profile page with fill in the blanks type entries: name, address, member since, age, sex, brief bio, favorite links, e-mail address, homepage, favorite quote.

  5. All articles by a particular username will end up on that person's profile page, chronologically.

  6. The latest 40 articles on the main page.

  7. Option to access the next 40, the next 40, and so on upto 400.

  8. Any web address or e-mail address inserted anywhere automatically to become a hyperlink.

  9. A search function. I think you can customize a mainstream search engine to do this.

  10. The page hits for each article and each profile page to be displayed.

  11. The "Top 30" articles and profile pages by page hits to be displayed on separate pages.

  12. Each profile page will also have the total number of hits for all articles by that person. A "Top 30" based on that. This page not to expire at the end of the year.

  13. TND Person Of The Year for each year, the one at the top of that list.

  14. Central Idea: to generate free content in a free speech environment.

  15. Gradually make it financially self-sustaining, if not outright profitable. Banner ads, sponsors, contributions, business partnerships.

Some kind of a competition between Sajha and TND for eyeballs would be nice.

Paramendra,

Would you like Freedom Fries with that? :)

*Goolting* in everything,
MainBatti.

With "Freedom fries or not", I don't think that is actually going to happen.

1. Sajha is an unmoderated site where is TND is moderated. That makes a hell of a difference.

In TND you may never read about "color of girl's panties", or "hasta-rekha" or "endless anthakeris". Though they seem ridiculous topics, people like to read these threads and sajha commands a much more broader reader base.

2. TND's personality is more that of a mature person discussiong relatively serious stuff where Sajha roams around as if it is a college freshman. If you take few names such as Ashutosh and Biswo and few others out, college freshman status drops down to highschool junior. Hence target audience is different.

3. Financial: Sajha sustains itself by banner ad etc. And possibly someone makes money out of it as well. TND in past has collapsed because it does not have that resource and no one personally benefits from TND because of it's not-for-profit status. Note .org in TheNepalDigest.org and .com in sajha. TND depends on donations! (Hummm... would you donate $ to sustain a site like theNepalDigest.org)

So TND and Sajha sell different types of apples to different crowds and direct competetion for eyeballs .... well, not visible right away.

Well, if TND becomes interactive - it has - and it becomes unmoderated....
