Nepali leaders know one thing and they are damn good at it: Mobilizing students to serve their and their parties interests. These power hungry leaders dont know how much damage they are causing to the nation by not asking their student organizations to stop this show of gallantry on the streets and colleges of Kathmandu. It started last week when a student leader was shot dead in Butwal. An unfortunate incident indeed. The government did take enough measures to please the students such as sacking of the ministers and compensating the family of the victim. The government has done all it could to please the students, however, the political parties have decided to prolong this student protests and make these students serve their political agendas. There's not even 3 weeks left for another big democratic movement called by some of the most opportunists political parties to start. No wonder, the political parties will merge their movement in the students' protests. The Result: more deaths, more tod-fod and more destruction of public properties including the colleges and the libraries. Also, there are chances of peace talks coming to a total halt. And who will be responsible for this?. The democratic political parties of Nepal have to be held responsible for this. All this happening in Nepal has now made me believe in a report that was published on the Himalayan Times some 4 months ago. It stated that its the UML thats been foiling the peace talks between the government and the Maoists. The Political parties never wanted this Maoist issue resolved because it was not and is not in their best interests. The Congressis too dont want the Maoists to join the mainstream. On the one hand they say, they want to be a part of the peace process, on the other hand they boycott all the meeting on peace talks called by the government! Now, these shameless bloodsucking leeches are bent on using the students to fulfill their power-desires. The students are angry because there wont be any union elections this year. They are angry because their leaders want them angry. They are angry that their rival group is angry. Now, doesnt this anger-hatred that our college students are showing make you think what the hell these people learn in colleges? Bidhyta dadati binayam.. or does it? And why are these students so keen on letting these netas jeopardize their future? Its about time our so called netas learned a few lessons from the Chinese History. During the Cultural Revolution and the mini Cultural Revolution of the late 80s studnts were used against the state and its estabnlishments& the Result: failed economy, development and long lasting effects! Nepal seems to be heading towards a huge mess. All we need now is a leader with a broom who can sweep all these makune and girija likes leaders in one sweep!

Isolated Freak, As you know, I signed up for Chinese classes (morning) at Biswo Bhasa Campus in Bhrikuti Mandap. The first semester went reasonably well. But since last February, the second semester has been a total mess: student netas lock up campus gates; or, they come to class and start making speeches, thereby disrupting our studies . . . sometimes, the teacher does not show up and so on and on. Often, classes are cancelled for no apparent reason. It's pretty depressing, really. I knew that college education (at least the environment) in Nepal is/was bad, but I never knew how khattam it really is, if Biswo Bhasa is a small example. I have tried to engage some of these student netas in discussions, and they freely admit that they are given money by political parties to raise hell in their campuses. Their Marxism is straight out of a party-pamphlet, and there is something of a rote quality what they say. Sunday is Nepal Bandh . . . and the next week is going to be sheer hell what with further Bandhs and so on. And to think that these hell-raising jokers are someday going to be our mantris and leaders is even more sad. oohi ashu ktm, nepal

Ashu, I think the root cause of this bidhyarthi rajniti in Nepal is super Cheap-Tuition fees at the Public Colleges. Where in the world you can get a Master's Degree for just Rs. 3000 (not even $50)? With all the best and the brightest students felling the country, I think our colleges are filled with people with political aspirations, and colleges tend to become their training grounds. Even those students who want to study and who for economic, social or other reasons do not get to go abroad, are deprived of their rights to study! Thanks to our great leaderrs, GPK, MKN and others, these student are turning into activists without any cause. As for the coming bandhs and andolan, not a single political party has so far condemned the violent protests. Maybe they get money from these Netas, whose apetite for power is even bigger that the mythical SURASA, who is belived to have a voraiocus apetite and almost ate hanuman on his way to Lanka. IF all this continues, the peace talks will come to a halt. No peace, no stability, no development and more anarchy, more vandalism.. and this all makes one think: How long are these shameless leaders allowed to roam free and cause damages to the national economy and students' future? Shouldn't they be thron into bhadragol jail? hey bhagwaan, i hope the next few wweeks will be peaceful, although the chances of it happeneing are next to none. namaste

I think the governmnet should right away arrest all those involved in fueling this unnecessary activism and vandalism. Also, they should shut down the colleges for 2 months and form a team to re-assess the college education in Nepal. I think our Public Colleges should be used as, along with a center for learning, a capitalist institution. Pay 30,000/year to study or else, go do the politcis. Education is for the people who deserve it, not for everyone. Tougher admission tests, high tutition fees, and quality education have to be our main focus. So much with this subsidiuzed education which only attracts these future party workers.

IF, When I first went to Ascol, I unwittingly ran into a 'bhishan' Akhil-Nebisangh yuddha in Lainchaur. I quickly figured out that the animosity between the two organizations in KTM was vehement, and unlike that in Chitwan, 'collateral damages' were possible. Despite some high profile murder cases[Mitra Mani Acharya, Shiva Ghimire], I never witnessed any clashes among Nebi Sangh-Akhil protestors in Chitwan in my life. In my two years of Ascol, I attended less than thirty days of class (plus almost all practical classes) due to the political turmoil. [There was this bespectacled guy from Akhil in Ascol who was charming, and used to approach us with his raised hand and Lalsalam greeting whom I found friendly. He was running for vice presidency from Akhil. One day, I heard his speech, he was saying that the final examinations should not be held on time etc. I was appalled by his proposition. I had memorized whole chemistry and physics and even math, and this fella didn't want those tests on time! I didn't vote for him, but the guy still won by huge margin.] It is obvious that it is the students from low to middle class families who are suffering. But it is ironic to note that Nepali Congress[the mother organization of Nebisangh] was the same party which freed Nepalese people from the brutal reign of Ranas and made sure that everybody is entitled to education. It doesn't behoove to these student organizations to start their protest by closing schools. But we need to look for root cause. There were no student organizations before. When Mahendra rounded up legitimate government, and suppressed people's freedom of speech, students rose to claim their right to organize themselves. The government then yielded to their demand. Hence Akhils were born, hence Nebi sangh was born. It is a classic example of how the nation suffers from the illconceived move of a dictator even after the dictator is long dead. Hope our schools will remain apolitical, and inspire researches forever. In our almost-three-thousand years of history, we have given no scientific contribution to mankind, and it is time we contribute something.I read so many theorems in my life, I used so many technical equipments in my life, nothing, nothing was named after, or made by, a Nepalese. It seems if the world were made only of us, the mankind would still be deprived of things like watches, and cycles.

Protesting sucks when it gets in the way of othes who don't feel like protesting. Take for example liberal students lying down on the street to stop traffic. I'd rather they go somewhere and sing khum-baya and smoke pot. OK Biswo, some conservatives smoke pot too, I know.
