There is something about the Shahs and the Kantipures. They don’t like each other since the days of Prithvi Narayan Shah and Jaya Sthiti Malla. So, when one of the Royal Shahs went postal and the entire dynasty was in trouble – it was easy task to find the culprits – Da Kantipures! Aren’t you glad that those jurnos in jail belong to the Kantipur group – NOT Kirtipur group? You know what Prithvi Narayan Shah did to those Kirtipures.

Some regulars here have an unwavering faith in Nepali janata - “[Nepali Janata] are much smarter than they are given credit for”. May be so. Or may be not. Sometimes Nepali Janata Janardan seems to belong to the exclusive club of people vying for the title of “Da Stupid”. We had a good chance of winning it when Nepal’s very own Panchayati System pushed a core program to the level of Gaun Pharka – and we all applauded and shouted “Gaun Pharka Karyakram – Saphal Pauchhaun! Pauchhaun” during one of those mandatory rallies. After Hritik Roshan kaanda, we have won the title – hands down.

I don’t understand why people were so miffed by David Letterman’s joke about the Nepali Royals. To start with, you and me are not Royals – thank goodness! Letterman makes a living making fun of or telling jokes about American Presidents. If you say things about the King or Girija in Nepal what Letterman says about the Bush/Clinton, you will be playing Papplu/Marriage with those Kantipures. It is a joke, Stupid! And it sound very real.

Talk about the joke and stupidity! Things are such that MAY BE Nepali people and the Royals deserve to be the butt of the joke. One of the Royals – in all likelihood Shree Paanch Yubaraj Dhiraj/Shree Paanch Maharaj Dhiraj – was believed to be the killer. He rose to the level of Menendez brothers or Charles Manson. And you get offended by making joke of the Royals? The Raj Sabha declared Dipendra knowing that he COULD be the killer and fully knowing that he was already brain dead. May be the royal custom/protocol warrants that, but sure sounds like stupidity. To add insult to Nepali Janata’s injury, Paras Shah IS going to be Nepal’s Crown Prince and the King! He is the only surviving royal male after Gyanendra – unless you listen to Babu Ram and get rid of the Royalty. Hmmm. Well, khaun bhane din bhari ko shikar, nakhaun bhane ... You know the rest.

By the way, did you get embarrassed when world media reported about Katto_Khaane system?

I get kick out of reading how the Shahs became King of Gorkha – and eventually King of Nepal. For God’s sake, Drabya Shah became King of Gorkha by winning a race! At a different time, Baikuntha Manandhar could have been our King. From time to time, may be one of the runners ought to stand in front of the Narayan Hiti Darbar and shout, “Hey, Daudanchhas?” (wanna run?). Our current runners are certainly capable of kicking the remaining royal butt!

Cheers!

Keep your sense of humor. You certainly need it to survive. A crooked smile in your face is better than a pouty face.

Yeah, in todays day and age eating human remains sounds barbaric, uncivilized. What kind of culture is this? A form of cannibalism?? Man, that piece of bone must be hard to chew.

Someone was even trying to explain it on scietific background. Come on!

Thanks god, its ONLY the Brahmins who are eligible to consume the criminatory remains. The picture of the brahmin who ate the "Katto" seemed to be happy on the elephant back and the goggles.

The NBC guys who run the "Fear Factors" might not have noticed it yet.

Can strictly vegeterian brahmins participate in "katto_khane"?
Biswo Posted on 13-Jun-01 03:35 PM

Oh, come on.

It is not remains. It is only food of eighty four items. There is
no bone, no meat, but just symbolical representation.

I agree it is antiquated, but I don't think it is cannibalistic.

No Nepali brahmin used to agree for such Katto Khane request. So,
until Tribhuvan's regime, it was the Brahmin from India who used
to perform Katto Khane.

Nepali brahmin started only after they were allowed to remain in
Kathmandu, their caste status reinstated and they were given large
sum of money.

Eat katto, but make sure not to eat golli (bullet) in the flesh.

Yes, agree with Gaunle, we Nepalese don't have a good sense of humor. It's one of the things we need to cultivate.

I can tell that _you_ are an arse. Why bring racism into this??

Remember: crooked smile, not frowned brows.

To the world media and beyond, the Katto_khane pratha is Nepali custom and YOU are a Nepali - although the system is prevalent only among the Royals. The wider world knows you as a Nepali, not as a Brahman, Chhetri, Newar, or whatever caste you belong to. As a society progresses, we need to give up some ridiculous customs and embrace new ones. Static society is like a stale water of a pond (well) and people living there are kuwa_ko bhyaguto.

Hmmm. A bunch of people can't wait to grab an opportunity to put down another group of people.

C'mon, grow up! will you?

I think people want each others katto in this forum. Take it easy. Love all and promote peace.

About Dipendra's Katto

"In the past, brahmin priests ate pieces of flesh of dead kings; it was not known if the ritual was repeated Thursday. Acharya received offerings and priceless gifts during the ceremony. Prime Minister Girija Prasad
Koirala and other senior officials attended the ritual amid strict military and police security. Thursday was declared a national holiday"
