Bush To Sign Americas Anti-Nightlife R.A.V.E. Act

Americas nightlife industry faces an uncertain future this weekend,
after Congress voted to approve the puritanical RAVE act, meaning crack
house laws will now be applied to all concerts, clubs and music
festivals in the US.
Property owners can be punished for any drug offence that their
customers commit - even if they work hard to stop such offences,
warned the Drug Policy Alliance just hours before the Bill was passed.
This is likely to deter nightclub and stadium owners from holding
events. Every musical style will be affected, including rock and roll, Hip
Hop, country and electronic music, they added.
The bill was passed after Senator Joe Biden sneaked it into an
unrelated Child Abduction Prevention Act, which allowed the RAVE act to become
law without any hearings, debates or even specific votes being taken by
Congress. Its incredibly draconian terms mean that if just one person
is caught smoking a joint at a public gathering such as a club, party or
concert, the organisers and property owners can be jailed for 20 years.

Muzik Decide Justin Timberlake Is Cool

Muzik appear to be repositioning themselves as a Smash Hits style
magazine for pre-teen clubbers, judging by the titles latest issue
which features a cover article on ex N Sync pop star Justin Timberlake.

The cover is decorated with a controversial picture of the Robbie
Williams type character naughtily exhaling smoke, alongside a strapline
which declares Justin Timberlake; from fool to cool.

Inside, the 6 page feature includes a picture of him holding hands with
his virginal ex girlfriend Britney Spears, while the interview reveals
that he nowadays enjoys smoking marijuana (I like pot, its not
addictive). However, the American idol claims hes still maintaining a
healthy fear of ecstasy.

The people Ive seen on ecstasy look like lunatics, says Justin.

This dude came up to me in a club one night and I was like oh my
Gaaad
(God), thanks for showing me what Im never gonna do.

The Economist Brands US War on Drugs A Medieval Witch Hunt

The United Nations continuing emphasis on prohibition style zero
tolerance towards drugs is being maintained by an unlikely coalition
between America, France and the worlds Islamic countries, the
Economist revealed this week in their latest report on the worldwide war on
drugs.

The main reason (for not embracing harm reduction policies) is the
powerful anti-change lobby, led by the United States, whose attitudes
and actions sometimes take on the ferocity of a medieval witch hunt,
said the magazine.

America is not alone, though, they added.

Islamic countries share its hostility even to the legalisation of
cannabis, as do Russia, China and Japan. The governments of Italy,
Ireland and France are also tough-minded. Jacques Chirac, in
particular, is an old anti-drug warrior.

The highly respected business magazine previously branded President
Bushs emphasis on prohibition a disaster, in an article two years
ago.

The Economist has long argued that drugs should be decriminalised,
they said.

But a policy of increased repression will surely result in thousands
of people being thrown in prison for sins that are little worse than those
alleged of the youthful George Bush: being young and irresponsible.

Two years on, their fears have been realized, as official US statistics
revealed that the number of people locked up in American jails is now
over 2 million for the first time in Americas history.

Killer Flu and Death Squads Devastate Thai Tourism

Over 50,000 European travellers have cancelled trips to Thailand for
April and May, the New York Times revealed this week, over safety
concerns in the South East Asian country. The principle issue prompting
cancellations is SARS, the killer flu bug sweeping Asia, though the
country is coming under increasing negative scrutiny over its murderous
anti-drug campaign, which has now seen over 2,000 people killed this
year.

Local authorities also passed new laws this week forcing tourists
arriving from Hong Kong, Singapore and China to wear face masks for two
weeks or face stiff fines, in an attempt to tackle SARS, which is
unlikely to boost bookings in the foreseeable future.

The escalating number of mysterious killings related to Thailands war
on drugs, however, is starting to grab the attention of civil liberties
groups, with one campaigner this week pointing out that the number of
suspected police death squad killings is now equal to that of the
carnage in East Timor in 1999,

Mike Jendrzejczyk, the Washington director for Asia for Human Rights
Watch, made his comment in the International Herald Tribune, adding
that
he considered the scale of killing as absolutely appalling.

"Thailand's image as a place where the rule of law is respected is
clearly under assault, he said.

Underground Resistance Launch Shock & Awe Part 2

Detroit anti-corporate campaigners Underground Resistance (UR) issued a
fresh call to arms this week, over British bootleggers apparently
moving onto their turf.

Kenny Dixon Junior, a good friend of UR and one of Detroits most
talented, spiritual and humblest producers, is getting blatantly ripped
off of two of his very rare records, said Mad Mike (writing on the UR
website).

They are being blatantly bootlegged and this is occurring somewhere in
London. We need your assistance in rectifying this situation. Kenny, or
none of us can afford to let people rip off our records. We don't sell
enough to have (allow) motherfu*ka's stealing.
