OR ...... what about temporary insurance for visiting elderly folk? (I know this is really neurotic, but still ... imagine the cost of an uninsured parent coming down with SARS on a visit ...)

Sally, that's scary. We were like mad when our university mandated all the international students to buy insurance for all family members. After having charged more than 8 thousand dollars to the insurance company for a broken arm for my kid, now I understand how important it is to have insurance.

If an unlucky graduate student has to pay only $2000? That's a lot. We know how hard it is to find charity support for a parent who just happened to be sick for 20 days on his/her 6 month visit here and did not have an insurance.

Even the Govt. hospital sent me $8000 bill for my mother to stay for one week in the hospital.I went to talk with case worker. Thank god, they considered the case as a senior citizen traveller. Therefore, I understand that if your parents are 65 and over, you don't have to pay a penny for the treatments in the Govt. clinics and hospitals. But I surely don't know about the parents who carry SARS.....?

Clinton won election in '92 largely because of his promise to reform the health system. Eleven years later, an uninsured person still can't sneeze in a hospital without being charged. And if you've got a preexisting condition--like, say, pregnancy--you can't get insurance, even if you're perfectly willing to pay the freight. And then if you DO have insurance and actually have the audacity to file a claim (gasp), the company is likely to fight it. For all I know being old is probably a pre-existing condition. You were lucky with that hospital caseworker!

Sally, I have heard that Cambridge Hospital here in Cambridge, MA does do free care if you cuold show them that you are unable to pay. All they ask is to fill out the form. No question asked. Perhaps there is some truth to it why people refer Cambridge as Republic of Cambridge. Perhaps it should secede from the rest of the country. :) All the good universities, Free care, great cafes, amazing bookstores!! :))

NK You are right about the free health care in Cambridge, MA. I have heard of a nepali lady who had pre-natal care, delivery and everything for free. Post-natal as well. There are lots of churches and organizations everywhere throughout the states that do help illegal immigrants for free. But I digress from the initial query.

Well, anyone who qualifies for Medicaid (or is it Medicare? I forget) gets free service, but you have to REALLY be low-income. The cutoff is something like $12,000 a year or even less, plus no savings, no car that can count as an "asset," and so on.
