Poudel blames Palace for instability

KOL Report

KATHMANDU, May 1 - Senior Nepali Congress leader Ramchandra Poudel has accused Palace of running the nearly eight-year-old Maoists insurgency in the country.

Speaking in Pokhara Thursday, Poudel further accused the present king of having working relationship with the Maoists during that period. He claimed the mass movement to be carried out by four main Parties would bring out the truth in this regard.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion of the May Day in Pokhara, Poudel also dismissed suggestions that political instability was due to political parties. He instead put the blame squarely on the Palace.

"The king has invited instability by keeping some (people) in the Palace, some were made to infiltrate our parties and some were driven off into the jungles. We are not responsible for the instability".

"With working unity between the Maoists and the Palace, local level elections, parliamentary and students elections could not be held. In order to find solution to this instability, political parties have united to carry out a joint struggle that would take the country to a decisive point. (snn/rk)

Koirala, Nepal warn of massive movement against regression

Post Report

KATHMANDU, May 1

Day before a planned massive public mass meeting by the countrys five major political parties, leaders of two main parties sounded a warning that "soon-to-start-peoples movement" would be more widespread and decisive.

Both Nepali Congress (NC) President Girija Prasad Koirala and Madhav Kumar Nepal, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist-Leninist (CPN-UML) jointly addressing a workers meet today warned the king either to co-operate with the political parties to restore the derailed constitutional process or put the century-long monarchy to risk. The meet was held after the Nepal Trade Union Congress (NTUC) and General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GeFONT) organised a joint workers rally on the occasion of 114th May Day in the capital today.

Addressing the meet at the Birendra International Convention Centre after the workers converged there, Koirala said, "Since the ongoing peoples movement was targeted against the kings regressive moves, king has two options: Either to flee or bend before the people and make commitment to remain under the constitution."

Koirala repeated his previous statements saying that "the peoples movement", which is going to be announced on May 4, would be a decisive one as there will be massive participation in it."

In a similar vein, UML General Secretary Nepal said the forthcoming "peoples movement" would be like a storm and wider in its coverage.

"It will be improved, strong and rapid in comparison to the 1990 movement and will ensure the desired goal at the earliest," he warned.

The NC leader appealed the leading workers organisations - NTUC and GeFONT - the co-organisers of the programme - to fully co-operate with the political parties in their movement for restoration of sovereignty of the people.

Koirala also claimed that the five-party movement against regression would help in bringing the present truce into a lasting peace. "Both the parties cannot escape from the negotiating table," said Koirala. "Whichever of them wants to escape will be the target of our movement."

Nepal also added that the movement would not derail the peace process, instead it would compel both the negotiating parties to come to an agreement at all cost.

"There have been positive signs in the talks due to our series of programmes against regression," said Nepal. He flayed the statements coming from the government side that the five-party movement would derail the peace process.

It may be an indication of the governments intention to escape from the talks in the pretext of the five party movement," countered Nepal.

Similarly, Laxman Basnet of NTUC and Mukund Neupane of GeFONT urged all the workers to be united against the kings regressive moves claiming the move was aimed at curbing on "the right to be united" and counter-productive for the workers.

Speaking at the programme, Leyla Tegmo-Reddy Nepal country director of International Labour Organisation (ILO) stressed the need for unity among the workers for their rights.

She highlighted the role of GeFONT and NTUC in poverty reduction strategy and assured that the ILO would continue its support in such efforts.

She also assured to support all the efforts targeted against eliminating all forms of discriminations against the workers. "I am with you in this effort," she pledged.

It is apparant that the political parties in Nepal cannot stand Nepali people enjoying peace. They have to come up with one thing or another. They have not been able to perform anything in last 12 years, except for, of course, driving the country downhill, they have started criticizing king. If we have waited for 12 years for those donks to do something, why can't they even wait for a year. Now that the situation seems to get better, these parties want a piece of it.

If I would be the king for a day, I would ban all those political parties, and drive those so called politicians out of the country (I guess thats why I'm not a king). Enough of their neverending drama. They should leave Nepal alone.
sparsha Posted on 02-May-03 11:40 AM

What's so unbelievable? What else to expect from these nautanki heros? They are doing their job and doing it well. In fact, they must be thanked for the job well done. They have not disappointed me.

""The king has invited instability by keeping some (people) in the Palace, some were made to infiltrate our parties and some were driven off into the jungles. We are not responsible for the instability"."

This what Ramchandra says. Yes, blame the King for everything that goes wrong. Everyone else (except the King of course) are "panchamrit" bathed clean. A student targets a car in anamnagar because the petrol is expensive and also the TU is not firm on student union-blame the King. Call Nepal bandh every other day and disrupt the daily movement of people, cause unnecessary stress (one nepal bandh day causes huge amount of financial loss and causes distress for many daily wagers) and inconvenience to the people and again blame the king. It's very easy these days. Do whatever you want and blame the King. Am I saying the King is "panchamtrit snan" clean. Absolutely not. But these political party leaders are not playing the game fairly. If the Narayanhiti causes a foul, of course the palace is to be blamed, then when these nautankis cause fouls either again the palace is blamed or Nepal bandh is called for one reason or another. When Maoists were shooting down people, murdering innocent civilians, looting peoples' hard earned money and properties these nautankis and their bharautes were hiding in the cave. They didn't dare calling Nepal bandh against Maoists atrocities then. Instead, they were crying for peace. Now, when peace is a possibility-not guaranteed of course, these nautanki heros are threatened. Why? Because they were sidelined. What is more important here? Peace in the nation or what roles are these Nautankis supposed to celebrate?

If people are responsible and aware of their duties as citizens or understand their rights and duties to the nation and fellow nepalis, no one not even the King regardless of the RNA's commitment can fool the citizens or take away what the citizens rightfully deserve. Until then, the blaming game in the name of the people [most of them don't care what rights are to be guaranteed by the "old" or "new" democracy constitution cuz they are busy securing survival-my thought (prove me wrong and I will change my thought)] continues.

""Since the ongoing people s movement was targeted against the king s regressive moves, king has two options: Either to flee or bend before the people and make commitment to remain under the constitution.""

The King is not threatening to go the jungle and resort back to senseless violence and looting but there are people still roaming freely claiming to do just that (going back to the jungle and picking up the weapons). Let's deal with them first. The king will still be at the Narayanhiti. We can deal with him later. Let's have peace in the country first. No peace means no stability and no development but destruction and more destruction.

"Both Nepali Congress (NC) President Girija Prasad Koirala and Madhav Kumar Nepal, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist-Leninist (CPN-UML) jointly addressing a workers meet today warned the king either to co-operate with the political parties to restore the derailed constitutional process or put the century-long monarchy to risk."

These damn napumsak bhate nautankis have the throat to call on the king the way they want. This is "democracy enough" for them. Why couldn't they talk the same way against Maoists earlier? Will they be able to attack Maoists as vigorously as they seem to attack the King nowadays if Maoists go back to the jungle? Hell No. They will one after another shy away tang muni puchhar lukayera. Stupid so called nautanki leaders are trying their best to disrupt the peace process. They have to prove and show the king what does the leadership mean.

These bhates were not elected by me. They neither represent nor lead me. Hence they are not my "leaders". Whoever elected these bhates don't have time to keep asking questions to these nautankis. First, they, electors- rarely see them after election and second, these nautankis are certainly elected by these sarbasadharans but not elected for them. These bhates rarely get spare time from their self-promotion for the people they claim to represent. They want to do whatever they want. Everything is constinutional for them (I wonder how many of these nautankis are well versed in the constitution. I wonder cuz they keep giving "duhai" of the constitution).

I will be surprised if these nautanki heros really put the nation and the people first. If they stand together and unequivocally voice and march for the national interest then I would say that is unbelievable.

I beleive not only me but every human existence of the universe would support Sparsha. These people cant let any one leave in peace. How can a person who has no education by any means, has no vision at all rule the country. They are not even aware of one should speak. A leader is invited to a school/college for some prize distribution and asked to deliver a speach to encourage them. Well, the topic of speach would remain how to topple the government and other related stuff. That is true how would they know what education means. Through out their lives they never came to this phase. They were only involved with vandalism not education. These sick leaders should be hanged at the Tundhi Khel for few days. And the whole nation should be invited to spit them, throw shoes on them and they whatever they want with them and finally set them on fire.
isolated freak Posted on 03-May-03 08:37 PM

I strongly support Sparsha's views. What do these leaders think themselves to be? Poudel, a product of Bhate-School (teen dhara pathsala), goes on blaming the King for all that went wrong in the country for the last 12 years. Another leader "fohora durbar ko dhoka ma naag tasne" baje aka Madhav Nepal is a stauch communist and says "anta-santa" to the King. Yet, another leader, much hated and disliked "hawaldaar buddhi" goes on revealing grand design and his own love for the post.

This is our leader's history:

Ram Chandra Poudel : A product of "Bhate-school" (teendhara Pathsala) and a Saptah-Puran bhanne puret in Tanahu.

Madhav Nepal: Fohora Durbar ko Goth ma basne baje ko choro. He spend his childhood sticking "naag" during the naag panchami at the doors of Fohora Durbar.

aaru neta ko pani khokdai chu.

GIrl Interrupted,

Yes, in today's world, leaders ought to be educated. Education makes you receptive and polite. Bidhya dadati binayam bhancha sanskrit ma. So, to be a good/great leader in today's world, one has to know economics, political science theories and above all be conneted to the ground realities of his/her country and also, one has to know the internationakl context.

unfortunately, ew don't have a single leaer who has all these qualities.

The power hungry dogs have ruined our country. They are not only power hungry but money hungry too. There was a time when Nepal and nepalese were known as the most beautiful and humble people. But the greedy politicians have spread the disease of dishonesty so much that everyone is after becoming quick millionaires by any means.
I hate all those damn politicians who have ruined our country...

Khimu,
I hear you. Life is frustrating and full of challenges. It is not easy for any one. The people that are sucessful have made it by hard work, dedication and vision (all most all Nepali in US).

SITARA once wrote "Life sucks but I chose to be in it".

Everything is in a loop, someone said. That seems to be true with Nepal.
