Just got May issue of National Geographic. Very interesting stuffs on the Everest, a timely tribute to the 50th Anniversay of expiditions. Check out the online version of the magazine: http://magma.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0305/feature1/index.html Personally speaking, interesting part of the coverage was the 3-D modeling, which I thought was pretty amazing in terms of the use of advanced digital photogrammetric techniques. . Similary stuff came out last year from Switzerland. I believe Prof Murai, one of the authorities in digital image processing, had led this team which included Prof. Armin Gruen and others. http://www.photogrammetry.ethz.ch/research/mounteverest/ They have done wonderful job of drapping a mosaic of very high resolution aerial photographs over 20m digital elevation model (DEM). This makes everything seemingly so real.
