Hi

thought of sharing my experience of Rukum visit... thought you might find interesting !! I have some photoes which I will send you separately later.

My visit to Rukum coincided with the arrival of first motor vehicle in Rukum district headquarter !

They test run the dirt road on Monday 28th of April (Baishak 15). Some 10,000 people gathered in this small village of Jumli-khalanga- the district headquarter. Majority of these people have never seen the motor vehicle in their lifetime and they are going to see it in few hours time.

Two welcome gates were already erected there a day before and people spend whole morning for final decoration of the gate. All the government offices, schools and organizations were temporarily closed that day to witness the arrival of the vehicle.

The road was build by Army under ISDP (Integrated Security and Development Program).

A army jeep followed by 6-7 sport motorcycle and 6 large tractors arrived at 11:30 am. The crowd roared in the mixed feeling of surprise and excitement. Some people were even seen running away for the fear of the "huge strage object" towards them. The wel come committee received the vehicles with Panche Baja (ethnic musical band), worshiped the vehicles with achheta, abir, batti and phulmala. Army who dug the road and the drivers who brought the vehicles were the heroes of the day. Major,

I was talking with Mr. Khadka, a old man in late sixties. He could not believe that the motor vehicle actually came to their district- he never imagined that road could reach in his district at least in his life time. He proudly says "Banchnu parchha, sabai dekhinchha!! Batti aayo, plane aayo, telephone aayo aba motor pani aayo" (If you survive, you can see a lot& electricity came, plane came, telephone came and now motor came all in my life time).

I met Mr. Top Bd. Khadka a local reporter who was quite busy in colleting news and interviewing people and taking photos. That evening he was quite happy that the phone was working and he was able to deliver the news to major media in capital city of Kathmandu- his news will be aired/printed the very next day.

I was taking tea one afternoon and thought to have small chat with the guy who was eating dalbhat.

I was quite surprised to hear that he is from Banfikot which is 6 hours away (on foot) and he came to Mushikot district headquarter of Rukum, to make a phone call to his relative who live in Kathmandu. "If I get my turn (to make phone call) quickly,I will go back home today." I later found out that getting turn quickly is 2 hours of waiting!!

When I said to make phone call is one whole day's programme- he said, " Well for people of Hukam, Ranma Maikot VDCs it takes nearly week 2 days to come to district headquarter , 1 day to make phone call and another 2 days to go back...if the phone line is not in operation then they have to wait 2-3 days until the system get fixed!!"

In Rukum there is 2 phone lines one is used by Chief District Officer and the other is for the public which is open from 10am-5pm.!! Some 200,000 people depend upon that phone to communicate with outside world.

Life is so hard for some Nepalese..

Great!!

Everyone might have had a different reason to go into jungle, but some did out of their hardships...government did not care, perhaps pretended some of these places did not even exist...on their own, it was impossible at this stage in time...Perhaps, going into jungle seemed to be an appropriate method to draw the whole world's attention to almost forgotten faces! Least it worked! Someone had to make the noises & sacrifices!

Government & Ppl. labelize them as terrors & terrorists...in the depth of everything, they are one of the most innocent PpL. who are remote from any kind of comfort imaginable. That's Life?

Sorry ashuji, did not mean to turn ur topic into anything else. Jus trying to pour some meaningless...confused thoughts to soothe my own souL! Thanks for sharing this good news.

Actually, bhenda2, life is so hard for the majority not just some of us-Nepalis. Don't you think?

As I was reading the post,

I felt bad that the Cars even arrived
The gates were ever made
Phone lines existed
And questioned,
The existence of Katmandu,
In the minds of people out there.

And I wonder,

If that wonder (in the natives)
Is the same foreignness
That behooves (ed)
For the demise of wonder
That one has for oneself
And will wait for more wonders
Of Worldbank and IMF(oreighnness)
