The sixth edition of Entrepreneurs Forum is taking place in Kathmandu later this week. Mrs. Ambica Shrestha, president of Dwarikas Hotel, will give a presentation based on her life as a businessperson in the tourism sector since the 1960s. In attendance will be about 60 young Nepali entrepreneurs and businesspeople. Entrepreneurs Forum has been an ongoing activity in Kathmandu since last September. It allows young male and female Nepali entrepreneurs -- usually in their 20s and 30s and already running their own businesses -- a platform on which to learn from others, share ideas and knowledge and develop professional connections with established entrepreneurs and other businesspeople. Often, speakers speak informally about their own life in business, talking about successes and setbacks, and answering questions raised by the audience. Past speakers at the Forum have been Shyam Kakshapati of Nanglo, Sanjib Rajbhandari of Mercantile, Raghu Shah of Himalayan Telecom, Prabhakar SJB Rana of Soaltee Group and Padma Jyoti of Jyoti Group. BUSINESS Ambica motivates young people "Himalayan News Service", Kathmandu, May 9, Ambica Shrestha is a well-known figure and a respected achiever in the Nepali business sector. While talking about her experiences at a forum organised by Business Service Aadhar (BSA), she said, "I had a tough time while starting my business about five decades ago." As a lady, breaking out of the joint family system was a major difficulty, however through determination and hard work she succeeded in business and become popularly as an 'iron lady' in Nepali business circles. Talking about her initial experience she said, "It was a necessity that brought me into business." Shrestha has been involved in tourism business, since the time Nepal had no direct links with any countries of the world and people had to go to India for developing links to global markets, she said. Regarding the risk involved in business, she said, "There is always risk in business but anyone who wants to start a business should not be afraid of taking risks. And failures should be taken as lessons," she stated. President of Dwarika's Hotel in Kathmandu, Shrestha expressed her opinions at length on the tourism business in Nepal as it was practiced and as it is practiced today. She said, "Tourism has seriously declined in Nepal recently due to many reasons. But what worries me more is the unhealthy competition within the country that has seriously harmed the tourism business." She said, "Hotels are under-cutting each others rates. Nepal's tourism industry has been hit hard in recent years by incidences like the Indian Airlines hijack, 9/11 attack in US, Maoist insurgency and other obstacles at home and abroad." "Ultimately tourism is the backbone of our nation today and will remain tomorrow too. It offers multiple benefits to the nation and its people and if it gets hurt, so will our national economy," she observed. Ethics is crucial in business, she reiterated and added that the government and other sectors must also maintain ethical standards. In my view, she said, "Quality is key for sustaining business in the long run." Entrepreneurs Forum, is a monthly event that invites a luminary from the Nepali business world for an informal interaction with young entrepreneurs. It aims to support the spirit of entrepreneurship. The event is organised by BSA and supported jointly by The Himalayan Times and Radisson Hotel. |
