Does anyone here know what this "American Biographical Institute" is? In Nepal, I come across resumes/CVs and even public announcements (in newspapers and radio) that so and so Nepalis -- as per their contributions to Nepali society -- have been selected as "Person of the Year" by this American Biographical Institute. Apparently, an ABI award is a highly-coveted honor in Nepal. I did a google search, and found out that the institution operates out of a post box address: American Biographical Institute Biographical Information P.O. Box 226 on J. Shelton Gordon Raleigh, NC 27602 http://www.palmdalelibrary.org/history/pg_146.shtml I don't know . . . maybe I am wrong, and don't know what I am doing. But I am really curious about this institution. Does anyone else have other information about this institute and its works? [Or, as I suspect, is it one of those institutions that you have to pay out fo your pocket to be awarded their "person of the year" title?] oohi ashu ktm, nepal

May be!! This trend was in climax couple of years back, and declined after Dr. Govinda Tondon (?, i am not sure about who was the person!!) rejected the offer and made it public. Has the trend resurfaced? Ashu, you have very watchful eyes! Be aware, they might be approaching you too!! :)

Noname, Dr. Govinda Tondon is a graduate of Nepalese Histoy, Culture and Archaeoogy (NeHCA). He served as a member-secretary in the Pashupati Development Board. He is a soft spoken guy, a dedicated student of Nepali iconography and also a leading flower enterpreneur (??) of Nepal. Lives in Battisputali area. I hope this helps.

IF, it did not help. Although that was informative, it did not help me to locate the person , who rejected such prizes and made it public. I remember that it was headline news in daily papers and was topics for public discussion. I strongly believe that the person was Dr. Tondon. Anyway, I am waiting the result of Ashu's KHOJI-NITI. Btw, Ashu I was impressed by your candiid remarks on Govinda Adhikary's article.

Noname, Following your lead, here is what I dug up at the end of the following Web page. http://www.trekinfo.com/news/news99-2.html More of a Man Than They Had Realized. Nearly everyone has heard of Time magazine's "Man of the Year" award. Another "Man of the Year" award, that of the American Biographical Institute, is less well-known. Dr. Govinda Tandon, an archaeologist living in Kathmandu, was at first pleased to have been selected for the honor, but when he unwrapped the beautiful wooden plaque that came with it, he discovered that the award was for "Woman of the Year." In a separate letter, the Institute explained that it had chosen him in the course of its "effort to recognize a small select group of outstanding women achievers throughout the world." Dr. Tandon, asking himself, "how can I accept an award from an institute that can't even determine whether I'm a man or a woman?," returned the plaque, thereby saving himself the Rs 20,000 (US $300) that the Institute said it needed from him to pay for entering his name in their directory. (Kathmandu Post, February 27) ******************* I guess that ABI would ask for a payment of $300 pretty much confirms my earlier suspicion. Its latest, high-profile victim, as it were, in Nepal is singer Komal Oli, whose ABI-conferred achievements were broadcast in this morning's 7-am national news (Radio Nepal) bulletin. Oh well. Are we in Nepal incapable of learning from the recent past? *************** Thank you for your comments re: the Govinda Adhkari piece. Others, if you are interested, please check out the LETTERS section of Kantipur national daily . . . dated May 1st, May 4th and May 7th. oohi ashu ktm, nepal
