... according to old testament and our own mythologies God(s) was very temperamental, given to anger, demand sacrifices, frequently testing his subjects...

...sounds strange, doesn't it...

...how can God be given to such human emotions...

...wouldn't God be compassionate and nothing but compassionate?...

... but everything is God's creation, even the emotions are created by God, one might surmise...

...which begs the question, if God can be compassionate, can't he also be angry?...

...but then one may further assume that your conscience could be part of God...

...when God gave the humans the freedom of will, he gave a part of himself in the form of conscience, that voice deep inside which tells you what is right and what is wrong...

...therefore, given the fact that conscience obviously gives thumbs up to compassion and thumbs down to anger, former is the chosen nature of God...

... but then why let anger and other negative emotions exist, if compassion is chosen by God?...

....ohhhhhhhh, it's mind boggling... stupid me.

Same pinch! I was thinking about the similar thing this morning. True, if compassion is chosen by God, than why is it so difficult for us to attain it and when we have attained it...why is it difficult to maintain it? Talking 'bout compassion, reaL mothers abandon their babies...abort their babies...everwhere u turn, u see deception and hatred...everybody trying to go one step ahead of everyone else. Too many mind bogging questions...yet to be answered!
YOu attain that serenity within you...you get rid of all that corruption and filth in ur souL...than just when u think ah! what a peacefuL beautifuL Life, your lusts, hatred, jealousy drags u down into dumps...to that stinky place again. I wonder what it would be to be a nun and live like a nun someday out in the himalays where nothing is there to pollute ur mind? It will be a perfect time! But then more than ur own comfort and peacefuLness, you need to be somewhere else where u are needed...amids pollution? Hm....No black and white answer! :-(
Thanks Sangey for ur post. I realzied if I was graded on my freedom of will, I would probably get 1/10 :-(. Take care.

I believe in God but all the stories I read about him are man made..fabricated..so I have doubts about that..
chick pea Posted on 15-May-03 08:02 AM

There are no rights or wrongs about any religion. It is what YOU belief in. If you believe in God that is OK, just as OK in not believing in God. It is what gets you through the day. I want to believe that there is a higher power even though I am not sure. I guess we will all find out when we die.

God did not create man in his/her Image, its the other way round....., just like people evolve (socially, culturally), Image of god also evolves, earlier god/ goddesses succumbed to such temperamental nature(s), that is understandable, because god which is something of an image prvided based on unexplaned incidences, such as rain, thunder, earthquake were made to carriy such Images. So, its stupid to interchange our temperament with that of a god, its the same. Just like invention of fire, agriculture, technology, invention of religion became pertinent, withought religion, there would be no culture, society. Religion can be taken as a glue which holds many people within a common belief system. This is Important, Biologically, because for the humans to Increase in number, which is the foremost reason why we are even here right now, culture and religion both are required for our perpetuation.

MONTOU!!!!!!!!!!! Where's Montou???????????
tick Posted on 15-May-03 09:05 AM

Hey, God exists! OKAY? I know He does because I just know. Physical evidence of God exists everywhere, if you look carefully.

The perception of god is man made, not the God himself. There is a difference. Like the 33 koti devtas we have, heaven, hell etc these are all man made. But God is not a concept, it is a reality. Everyone gets an opportunity to experience God at a time or another but most of us choose to ignore it or do not get-it.

There is also a difference is tradition, rituals and how we link God with those practices. God is above tradition and practices. God is above religion. God is above philosophy. Religion, tradition, philosophy are ways to getting closer to God.

I highly recommend that you read the biography of Vivekananda, RamKrishna Parhamsha and the book Autobiography of a Yogi to get started.

Oh, God I am getting sajhaholic. I need to get back to work before it becomes a problem.

Being temperamental isn't a divine trait, first of all, but human. Anthropomorphism, I would say, is an implement utilized in order to put things in layman's terms so that ordinary people can understand God better, typically by circumventing abstract concepts known only by the few. Whatever religion you are speaking of, the basic idea probably is this: God gave us free will, and with our own free will, he wants us to try to know him better, to get closer to him. Morality of course is a manmade concept. Among primitive cultures, like say the Papuans, cannibalism is an acceptable part of life, and perfectly okay, but to us it would be unacceptable, and also seem preternatural.
