Hey guies, i would like your views on the current SARS crisis here in Asia. what do think about the Chinese government's policy toward tackling of the deadly virus? and how long do you think it will take for this thing will be stalked before it gets out of hand? Meanwhile its impact on Nepal is likely to be deadly if and when it strikes the region. i must regretfully admit ours is the least prepared nation to handle the crisis. we just can hope and pray this disease doesnt strike our already war torn country.

I worry too. I live here in US but I have a cousin in Hong Kong and I have family in Pokhara and my father travels a lot. I think that travelers should avoid all infected countries until this virus dies down and goverments should restrict travelers. Not everyone will die if they get this. I may be wrong, but I heard that only 5% will die if they contract SARS. I think and hope that eventually this visus will soon be non existant. it just needs to be controlled some way. I haven't heard of cases in Nepal, Have you?

The Chinese government is doing its best to contain the disease. They have now started a "fight against sars" campaign and million of dollars worth equipments and anti-biotics are being flown to China from Germany, the US and Rumania. Also, a joint team of the Japanese, Chinese and American scientists started its research on SARS yesterday. A Swiss company--Roche--is also spending money on finding a cure to this deadly disease.

As for the Chinese government's measures:

1. If anyone is found guilty of hiding the SARS patients or the actual SARS figures, they will face prosecution.

2. Quarentine: just sealing off the areas and restricting peoples' movements along those. Also, isolating the persons with the virus.

3. SARS HOTLINE: A few Peking University Students have set op a SARS hotline. These students from the PU's Public Health Department answer calls related to SARS and suggets precautionary measures to the people from Peking.

4. China has asked the international community for help.

5. They are spraying some chemicals (I don't know what though..) everywhere and anyhwere imaginable.

6. Everyone is asked to wear a mask.

So far, no SARS cases reported or registered in Nepal.

RNAC has postponed its flight to the affected areas which include Singapore, Shanghai and HongKong.

Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj has set up a seperate ward for the possible/likely SARS victims.

I hope this helps. If it doesn't don't blame me.
