From kantipuronline.com Students quit TU exam By Sureshnath Neupane KATHMANDU, May 22 - Students of Bachelor's level in Science (B.Sc.) third year, have quit their exam of Physics, claiming the question to be out of level in capital on Thursday. Students of Tri-Chandra College (TC), appearing the exam at Shankar Dev Campus ripped the question papers and forced others to quit their examination. The aggressive students rushed towards TC and disrupted the exam, where the students of Amrit Science College and Patan Multiple Campus were taking the exam. "A massive number of students forcefully entered the class rooms and disrupted the exam," said Angaj Gautam, assistant campus chief of TC. The student activists have submitted an appeal to the examination controller demanding re-examination within seven days. "We will carry out the investigation about the case and let the students know about the possibility of re-examination as soon as possible," said Badrinath Shrestha, examination controller at Tribhuvan University. Despite hindrance to Physics' examination, other subjects' examinations were carried out smoothly. (bg)

I remember those days when I was appearing for the Physics exam of my first year in Intermediate level. Since our batch was the first in year system from semester system, we did not have real number of classes in the whole year. It had a lot of "Class bunks" and strikes by student union under the leadership of Akhile. So, our leader classmates saw question paper, within a 10minutes they announced we were not taught anything that appears in the question paper. The flame spreaded and question paper and answer sheets were teared out. Then, we chanted slogans agaiinst TU. It was around 7 or 8am. Immediately we moved to hostel's volleyball ground, the student's leaders in Student Union came in front and gave speeches one after another. ..... Well, as a follower (forced follower in this exam boycott), we took lunch and moved to TU's VC's office in Tripurshwor to press and ensure that exams be retaken within a few weeks. That very first day, VC Ram Chandra Bahadur Singh did not appear in the office. WE spent a whole day in his office instead of preparing the next subject on following day. Since there was no assurance, we were caught between the pride of these so called student leaders and unattentive TU officials, so next day also the exam was boycotted not even entering the exam rooms, but, in the hope that TU will announce for postponed exam date. The sprialing continued and we spent all days in TU's VC's office. In 2nd or 3rd day, we were told by Registrar that they can not repeat the exams. Its not their biz. whether the question paper comes from within taught part or not, they were concerned only with the question is from course outlined in the syllibus. We left all exams without attendance. Finally, we lost the fight. We had to appear the first year's exam with our junior's first year exam on the following year, thus, we had continous exams for 2 months covering first year and second year's exam. It was the terrible exam duration that lasted 2 months, and we appeared 22 subjects in two months with almost 1 alternate date or so. Just imagine 22 subjects. What results will you expect out that 22 subjects in two months? It was the worst result for the batch, I guess the lowest in TU's history. Out of about 400 students from the campus, only about 20 students clleared the both first year and second year exams. I remember those nights I spent reading and trying to understand that idiot "dy/dx" and its meaning which was taught only 4-5 lectures out of 1 full academic year. Same problem with co-ordinate geometry, that GD Pant's book, was a bit easier to me because I had studied the "OPTIONAL MATHS" in highschool with interest. Its very fortunate that I was able to clear those 22 subjects. Well, there were many subjects were taught only 10 classes on a whole year of academic year, that went about 1.5 year in real time calendar. We had classmates from Budha's first batch who were in SLC Board List of top 10 were also victimized by the worst combination of student leaders and TU's unattentive officials. I mean even SLC's top 10listed serious and brillian students could not clear the exams. I wonder whether some of them even achieve their goal of life, because of this poor combination system. I wish the scenario does not repeat again and again. I will dedicate this article dedicated to those classmates of mine who were really brilliant but became the victim of lower grade student leaders and unattentive and irresponsible TU officials. I am not sure , but, wished they could be great peoples who could lift the quality of life in Nepal. In contrary to Nepal, I got a chances to witness what a university is meant, while I was in Roorkee University (now IIT Roorkee). We had only total 12days of class closure in the history of 137year old institution. When one Afgani Student hit an Indian student, or another case when a girl student whose father shuffled her grades, we had to bunk classes in the first or second lectures only, and university VC to Professors rushed to fulfill our demands and take appropriate action. They did it too. Not only in India, I witnessed the responsibility and liability a university pays on the loss or damage on students' side by their mistake. A couple of years back when a question in the entrance exam (for Masters) was found misleading after the end of exam, the university offered all the students who attended the entrance exam to get admission if they were deprived of the chances just sort of the full mark for the question. They found 5 students and 2 students agreed to join Masters, and university paid them some lumpsum "BAKKING" as a payment to the damages of their own year academic period just for the one error. Why all those nasty things happen in Nepal? Reasons I feel is: 1. Student organizations are mouth piece of political parties. 2. Students get living expenses from parents. They are too dependent, and they enjoy free time by resting financial burdens to their parents. 3. Students do not have any thing else to do it after studies. There is only one cheap time passing that is political talks and campaigns. A student of age 16-18years, in that agressive age, want to do something, and has highest chances of getting exploited if s/he does not have right guidance. Its what happening. 4. Students from outside Kathmandu valley control the Student unions. They have no community to spend times in weekends, so hold political meetings and get excited with the aim of making Nepal a better country. ... Poor fellows, they forgot their prime responsibility was to study, complete and join the work force to make a better Nepal. Right action, at wrong age and place. 5. Students from inside Kathmandu Valley and outside valley especially upper middle class. Now, they go to Private schools and private colleges. A nephew of mine, he went to private college in Nepal that is run by the Delhi Board, thus, Hadtal in public schools or question paper tearing won't affect him. Kati lekhau. We all know these facts, don't we? Kag karaudai ma pani barshane wala chhaina, even in Kahderi. So, let them strike ..... Life is short. If its their entertaining method, let it be. Only my concern is whether there are some victims because of all this mess. GP
