I sat restless on my bed. Thoughts of Niren and Amite kept haunting me. After what had happened in trishakti club , they were bound to come after me all guns blazing.I hardly had any friends in handigaon then. I wondered if things would be different if it were not for my sisters. Having sisters in a TOLE like ours was mentally draining...... "Oys! her ta maile k banako chu" my sister cut me off. Eating sadheko wai wai, with lemon, achar, and a cool glass of kagati paani was out of this world. I cursed myself for my earlier thoughts. Niren and amite were both classmates of my younger sister in hvm. I tried to divert my thoughts and turned on the radio. "eh k bhayo? bajena ta" "hyaa! aaja handigaon ko jatra ni, bihanai line kati sakyo" my sister smiled "janu parcha la bhare teera". I nodded my head. Suddenly it became clear to me, why niren had warned me bout today. it was gonna be one helluva jatra I thought as excitement took its toll inside me ********* The beating inside me continued to throb hard as time ticked by. I took my walkman and slid in cassette of Kenny Rogers. I didn't like music but the song "coward of the county" continued to hit me hard. I took the headphones off.I looked at my hands, I was shaking. "thuikka, darcheruwa" i said to myself. I went to my parents' room and opened the drawer. I let out a sigh. it was getting late. my fate awaited me.I wish I had a bigger brother then.I wanted to go and take karate lessons in winter, but my mom strongly disallowed that. Humiliation, godai, laughter of gals, disappointment of Sheetal.suddenly, this last thought of Sheetal, gave me new found hope.I found a chain used to tie johnny, our dog, right there in the drawer. I smiled in triumph and slid it inside my pocket. The intoxicating blend of trumpets, cymbals, drums, and cheer of the crowd soon filled the air" "oysss! saili didi shouted "jhattai aaija, rath lyai sakyo". I peeked from the window. People were making a mad rush out of their houses.I felt the chain in my pocket and headed out feeling safe. ********** The street was festive. The crowd was huge. The vendors were having dashain.Icecream and barafs were running out. The drunkards swayed vigorously. The chariot held its ground. The long winding sound of trumpet, mesmerized me as i tried to comprehend what that music meant filled with both fright and joy. The crowd let out a "AWE" as chariot swayed wildly to the right. I spotted "debre" hemante and suraj on the other side of the street. "eh oyss, k cha! Niren le khoji rathyo timlai!" he sounded nervous. I felt the chain once more "aawoss na ta". I spotted Pawan dai nearby and he waved at me. My fears disappeared. He was popularly known as "khalnayak" because of his black dressup and long hair. He used to visit our house often. so i thought i could resort to him when the time came. As the rituals wore on, the chariot made roundabouts and slowly started heading towards its final destination the "gahana pokhari." I wondered if people really knew about the significance of this jatra. Jatra was excuse to most people here to get free drinks, to have gang fights, settle down old scores, and oogle at girls. "oiee herr ta tyaha, jayanti sanga khukuri raicha" "debre" hemante got excited.I had never seen khukuri with a teenager. I got scared. There seemed to be a minor scrimmage behind bhagwati than. However, seeing live action was ultimate fantasy for kids like us then. It was indeed amazing to see guys from all over kathmandu gather here once a year "police khoi hola hai" i asked. "kaha hunu ni dhide haroo, bhatti pasal ma holan" suraj quipped. ******* "oys, timlai sancho chaina ki kya ho?" sheetal seemed concerned, as i blushed sitting at the edge of pokhari, with my sisters. "hoina thikai cha" I smiled back. She continued to stare at me. I stole a peek here and there feeling like being in some kind of special trance.. a fleeting trance. People were caught off guard as the chariot made its way around the pokhari. Many were pushed to the water. It was a wild mess. People started to panic. Amdist this confusion, people got in between me and sheetal. I offered her my hand. She couldn't reach it. I got pushed back...."fuche haroo, k gari ra .uta bhaggg" they shouted. I got lost in the crowd, trying to find my way looking around for sheetal and my sisters. I was growing pale. a hand tapped on my shoulder, and i turned back. To my horror, Niren stood there smiling with four other guys ready to pounce on me. I was cornered onto the wall of Valley campus then. "taile hijo k bhanya re M***, pheri ek choti bhan ta" I tried to ignore him and walk away, but he caught right at my collar and held me. "yetti chadai kaha janchas" he smacked me on my face. I felt salty taste on my mouth. Blood started dripping from my lips. Tears started running down my cheeks, not because of pain, but of sheer humiliation. I stood there with clenched fist and teeth. Out of the blues, came pawan dai, debre hemante, suraj and my sisters alongside sheetal. Niren's friends got pretty bad from them as they scurried away. Niren was still holding onto me. My sister managed to kick amite "saley, hepchas eklo bhai lai payera" I smiled within. "Oyss, kina dara, hande na" Everyone awaited. I looked at each of them one by one, and my look transfixed on sheetal, who was holding seto baraf on one hand and misery in her eyes, she nodded. Without thinking twice. I let go of my fist in a flurry with tears still overflowing. Niren tried to hit back, but my emotions got the better of him. As he hit the ground, I kicked him one more time before i clung to my sister and walked away. As the cymbals, shouts, trumpet, drums faded into the horizon, Roger's song continued to play in my ears "Somtimes you gotta fight when you're a man"

Awwwwwwww... Comfu. Heart wrenching tale of adolcescence punch ups. Is it factual or fiction? Can't imagine you cobbling anyone with or without cycle chain. It's ok to be coward of the country do a bit of gambling and sing Lady. A true romantic hero then last action hero I say, dear boy!! Incase you wanna be a man, then I suggest "Naughty Boy" range from Bata or anything equivalent .e.g. Bansbari more bang for your buck.

Oys Ji, Damn!, you reverted my emotions back by 15 yrs or more, It would not be wrong to stretch the figurative and say I tasted ragat and ansu at the same time all over again. I am from Bhatbhattni and have seen all the jatras around there. Reaaly good mix of emotions. BTW, I got smacked pretty bad at one time during the festival, this guy smacked me up against the wall, my head bleeding behind the ear, in my rage I bit his finger to the point, when I saw him years after, we shook hands, I could see my bite marks&and I was wise not to ask him if those were my fangs, my ears ringing. thank you for the piece. Kurl.
