The reason Dipendra was never sent out of Nepal for study other than to Eaton was because he was not a good student. He created a lot of ill will toward himself and Nepal royalty. He did travel quite a bit as you will recall, to Japan, Austrailia and other places. He was not a good ambassador for Nepal. So when you ask why he did not study more outside of Nepal that is the answer. Geography, come on, what a simple subject. How do you get a Ph. D. in geography and do anything productive with such a degree. He should have been studying sociology, economics, public administration, international affairs.

The crown prince does not have any other choice than become an ambassador - the ambassador for any field of foreign relations and other political, social and cultural aspects of Nepal. There is another choice - to become a puppet to be manipulated by bhar-dhars. But I don't think that is good for a country. We would like to see the king as the supreme leader of our country. So any crown prince should be trained to become an ambassador. You become what you learn to become.

My sources tell me that Dipendra was indeed a GOOD student. Sure, he might have been another Einstein, but he was good (certainly above-average) at what he studied. He did well on his A Levels at Eton, and seems to have impressed his teachers and friends there. Besides, he read a lot, and I wouldn't doubt his intelligence. Besides, let's not forget that geography is NOT an easy subject. Sure, most of may think of studying geography as ONLY finding lakes and towns and countries on a map, but the discipline of geography is surely a lot more complicated than what gets taught at school in Kathmandu. Harka Bahadur Gurung, one of Nepal's foremost thinkers on develpment, is a PhD geographer. I, for one, would NOT question Dipendra's academic intelligence nor his choice of geography as a major. oohi ashu
