It has been raining cats, dogs, SARS and West Nile in DC! This, for the last 3 weeks.... everytime I await the weekend, it pours! This morning, I woke up thinking I was back in KTM....really, the incessant downpour, the pitter patter on my roof, the murky smell of wet soil, the dampness, and the misty moisture in the air caused an assault of nostalgic memories from home. I recall one particular stretch of rainy Asar mahina.... downpour after downpour of rain, moody rain, drizzles and sudden impulsive showers causing flash floods and mud puddles everywhere. Two weeks of monsoony isolation (from the outside world) was causing me cabin fever. I had been through all of the Amar Chitra Kathas, Tin tin and Asterix comics and was contemplating reading some cheesy Mill&Boon, when.... The dogs started barking, howling and going beserk at some invisible monster. My mom and I rushed to the door, peering out through the windows toward the gate--Nope, none there! The two Tibetan Mastiffs would not quieten down... something was out there. My mom went to the kitchen and looked out the kitchen window where she had planted a small Karesa bari with long cornstalks ripe for the picking. The cornstalks were shaking, quivering like they were possessed. "shhhhhhhhhhhh..... there is something out in the bari" said my mom. " Bhoot..........Mamooooo!!!" "hoina hoina.... hush wait!" Then the "it" came out. It was a small, young monkey....the cutest thing ever. It must have escaped from the nearby zoo or perhaps from the woods... well, it certainly was a small ball of wet fur, blinking innocent eyes and small hands clutching on two ripe makai. My mom, who was notorious for picking up stray animals has a heart of warm candle wax! Because of her kamalo maan, we had ended up as a family of two dogs, two cats (stray), three kittens, one bakra and four rabbits... complete with a proper name and baboo/nani attached to it... My dogs, Sherra baboo and Pinchoo baboo had to be contained while my mom tried to go out in the pouring rain to rescue the little monkey. "Sugreeeeeeeeeeeev, Sugreeeeeeeeeeev..... aaija aaija! la makaai khana aaija!" My mom coaxed the little monkey. The monkey hesitantly approached my mom, streched out its hand and grabbed the makai out of my mom. The next day, the little monkey returned and my mom was ready with some pauroti. And so, it continued for a whole month... they (my mom and Sugreev) had formed an inexplicable bond.... she would talk to him and he would respond with an outstreched hand, but always ready to bolt. My dad heard about the Sugreev project and warned my mom..." Jungali baandar le tokyo bhaney injection laaoonu parla... ke nachahiney kaam gareko?" "hoina hoina,yo ta ratiyi sakyo hajur...herisyosna, kasto mayalu cha!" My dad in exasperation would say " Dukha paoola, dukha paoola!" After a month, the rain stopped and Sugreev stopped coming, while my mom (worried that he had been killed) called out to the trees " Sugreev, sugreev, aaija aaija!!!' ...to no avail! Eventually, we forgot about the monkey episode. A year later; it started raining again.... ceaseless, buckets of droplets, spattering, splashing and beating down upon all living and nonliving things....while my dogs stunk up the verandahs with their wet fur and dirty paws! Then, it started again.... the howling, barking, growling...this time mixed with screeches and strange ferocious sounds...and the dogs seemed afraid of the intruder. "It is Sugreev, Sitara....it is my sugreev, he remembers me....Aaoo, aoo!" said my mom overjoyed that the monkey was still alive. My mom opened the kitchen door and we stepped out... seemed like our bari had been carpet bombed or stampeded! The cornstalks were all broken, bits and pieces of corn all over the place and the other vegetable plants were trampled to gundruks! "Launa, lau.... ke bhayecha...Sugreev, Sugreev!" called my mom. There he was a HUGE, DHENDEY BAANDHAR, glaring at my mom with his teeth bared. " Mamoo, najik nagaisyo....!!!!" I called. But, try telling my mom that animals CAN be harmful! "Sugreeeeeeeeeev, aaija aaija.... aaish? Makai kha!" my mom called. The dhendey baandhar screeched at her... grabbed the makai and threw it at her wacking her with a resounding "thwaack!"... and with a *so there* look in his eyes, turned around and walked away , rudely flashing his bright red rear end at us! Speechless, we digested the fact that Sugreev had GROWN UP to be an UNRULY Teenager!!! Next afternoon.... We heard the same skirmish outside, but this time,... my mom was ready with a GULELI!!! Yes.... I miss the Monsoon and the Makaai Bhatmaas season, but most of all, I miss my mom and her antics!

Gurluuu_interrruptttuu!!! >>how many illnesses are u blessed w/ ummm, Diabetes is what I might get from excessive sweetness you provide through your writings. Beside that, I've got few bruises around the heart, Weak lungs (thanks to cigarettes and G smokin' without Interruption), Weak liver (thanks to sauni ko bhatti pasal ko THARRRA), Weak brain due to the excessive use of stimulants, depressants and hallucinogenes, ulcers (thanks to cigarettes which reduces an appetite), shaky legs due to the ulcer, dizzyness (too much chatting), insomnia (chatting), hypertension (too many good lookin' pictures of the girls in sajha), malnutrition ... oh the list GOES on!! In short, lets say i am walkin' HOSPITAL heheh!!! So never ever become Pujari re kyaa, especially PREM ko PUJARI!! Remember this song about Pujari? >>sachchi baat kahi thi maine Logon ne suli pe chadhaaya Mujh ko jahar ka jaam pilaaya Phir bhi unko chain na aaya. Sachchi baat kahi thi PUJARI LE ehh (all the pujari's were killed brutally, and history repeats itself forever) :) (sitara jyu le football khelni hola malai, for diverting her thread to nowhere.. ehh.. HAZURR IT'S JUST A COMMERCIAL BREAK)

LO Behold!!! Nepal's answer to Arundhati Roy. Chitara (from DC... oops forgot the title) most vivid narrative as of date. Could hear therain drops, was it corrougated tin roof? The drumming is as exquisite as Lars Ulric from metallica. The smell of fresh wet mud. mmm Sit on a balcony, watch the rain pour down, sip hot cuppa tea, just blank stare at the small streams, making pattern on the dry mud and gurgle down the drain... / cuddle with tintin, astrix, Indrajal comics (bahadur/Mandrake/Phantom). Monsoon home. :o)

Sitara, The title reminded me of the classic song, Asarai Mahinama.. Here it goes: Asarai Mahinama Pani Pari Rujhauni Eklo Yo Mero Man Kashari Bujhauni Bhanthin Hai Maichangli Rudai dharara Naudara Pari Chha Kampani Sahara Beechod Ko Belai Ma Mannai Baralni Nayaur Ko Boli Yahi Bela Maichang Ke Gardai Holi Peedima Basera Ke Ke Kura Gamdai Ho Kahile Hasdai Ho Kahili Rudai Ho Malai Nai Samjhara Chang Chang Baganee khahare Khola Aba Ta Chora Kudne Bho Hola Din Bhari Kheldo Ho Amaa Lai Pirdo Ho Sajha Pare Pachi Amaa Lai Shodho Ho Kha Baba Bhanera Enjoyed reading your anecdote.
