Namaste everyone,

Good news for movie lovers in Kathmandu!

Martin Chautari (an organization started, among others by former Boston Nepalis such
as Bikash Pandey and Pratyoush Onta)has joined forces with the Godavari Alumni Association (GAA) (the president fo which
is a former president of the GBNC) to
launch the Kathmandu Film Archives (KFA).

In coming months and years, this KFA hopes
to develop itself as an institution to show good movies from around the world on a regular basis in Kathmandu.

With support from you all, the KFA will also host directors' presentations, assist
writers to write movie reviews and
promote discussions and general awareness about all aspects of the art and the craft
of film-making.

For its inaugural show, the KFA presents

ZHANG YIMOU's

"R E D S O R G H U M (1987)"

Cinemascope.
Place: The GAA Hall, Thamel
Date: Saturday, September 30, 2000.
Admission: FREE for this first show.

Come re-discover the magic, the thrill and the romance of movies!!

Here's more info about the director:

Zhang Yimou is one of the leading directors of China's "Fifth Generation" filmmakers.

He made the directorial debut with Red Sorghum (1987), which won the Golden Bear at the 1988 Berlin Festival.

Set in the remote Shandong province in the 1930s and rich with mythical overtones, Red Sorghum uses minimal dialogue, haunting music and stunning visuals to tell the story of a meek young bride (Gong Li) who develops into the forceful head of her husband's winery after his death.

Zhang Yimou met Gong Li in Beijing's drama school. The couple received considerable international acclaim since their debut, Red Sorghum.

Some of the films they cooperated in are:

Red Sorghum -1987
Ju Dou -1990
The Terra-Cotta Warrior-1991
Raise the Red Lantern -1992
The Story of Qiu Ju - 1993
To Live - 1995
Shanghai Triad - 1996

Zhang Yimou once acted. His performance in the film The Old Well has won him best actor award from Tokyo Film Festival.

The First Show of the Kathmandu Film
Archives went very well this evening.

Around 40 movie-lovers turned up to
enjoy "Red Sorghum" on a big
cinemacopic screen at the GAA Hall.
The GAA provided tea to all afterward.

Special thanks to Mehendra "Honda" Sakya,
a past president of the GBNC, for all his support and personal dynamism; to Bhaskar Gautam and Sanjog Rupakheti (both of whom
may well be future Boston Nepalis!) for
all their tireless work in taking care of many details; Sudarson Karki for handling
the technical details without a hitch;
Biresh Shah, Pratyoush Onta, Shizu Upadhyay, Sujata Thapa, Bikas Rauniar, Samjhana Upreti and Anup Subedi for giving excellent advice so that the concepion of the Kathmandu Film Archives could travel from the phase of
a mere idea to the phase of a flawless execution.

Next show: Friday evening; October 20,2000
at the GAA Hall.
