Unable to contain the Maoists by other measures, keen on suppressing the freedom of the press, unable to lead his own party to unity, and on the spotlight for corruption, nepotism and much else besides, and eager to escape the Lauda heat by consolidating powers for himself, His Majesty the Girija Sarkar (HMGS) has now formally revived 1990 (gasp, choke!!) ko then-drafted anti-Jan Andolan provisions. If these provisions pass through (through whatever means!), then: a) The CDOs and the Police will have the power to arrest anyone they suspect to be not acting in the national interest in ways they define what those national interests are. b) The press will not be able to print/broadcast whatever it wants to. c) Censorship, arbitrary arrests will be considered the norm. And much worse. HMGS's reasoning is that these measures are necessary against the Maoists, a large number whom are suspected to have come to Kathmandu in the past two weeks. Given's HMGS's bahunistically authoritarian tendencies, the Nepali Congress ko general impotence and incompetence, the days ahead are indeed dark for our maatri.bhoomi. oohi ashu
