I have heard from unconfirmed sources that recently there was a huge rift between members of different ethnic groups in the ANA. Can someone with inside information care to share with the general public what is going on??????????????
Nattu Posted on 05-Jun-03 07:42 AM

Saroj Ji,

It wasn't actually related to any ethinic groups but the there were some disagreements and internal dispute ( HAANAA HAAN ) between the executive members. Some of the executive members weren't too happy about the whole situation and resigned.

2. am glad we decided to skip the convention after all!

I thought the haana haan was about something other than the ethnic rift...in either case, it's truly sad :(

Joie, I think they're talking about a different convention.
Horizon Posted on 05-Jun-03 09:55 AM

Anything that may / may not have happened among ANA Executives has no impact on 2003 Denver Convention. Rocky Mountain Friends of Nepal ( RMFN ) is the organizer and everything is as planned.

So, JDV Get you ass out here as planned, will ya ? :)))))))))))
ashu Posted on 05-Jun-03 10:19 AM

This is NOT directly related, but:

I have often thought why Nepali partnership businesses in Kathmandu (or more appropriately, the ones my colleagues and I have seen so far ) -- with rare
exceptions -- fail . . . often leading to bitter jhagada, emotional tensions,
destruction of investments and friendships and, well, festering bad blood.

I mean, one day, beaming with Binaca smiles, these people approach you like they are the best of business partners, and that everything is great.

Then on another fine day, you run into one of them in some restaurant, and all you hear is his rantings against his now-former business partners, telling you how khattam they were and are, and on and on.

Just how does this happen?
How do formerly "good partnerships" end up being "worse" and full of jhagada?

My own hypothesis is this:

In most partnerships or team-work-based business or community or whatever, there is often ONLY one person who -- because of his personality or bad genetics or habits or whatever -- causes more damage to the whole team than any other person.

I call this person "the tipping point person", and I say that this person needs to be watched very, very carefully in any group-setting.

Sure, in a partnership or in a community, tensions can always be there -- but often under control and can be diffused.

But when this "tipping point person" has his way, often because of some imagined/perceived slights or grievances for which he wants justice, he ends up dramatically ESCALATING the tensions within the group, and before you know it, the whole partnerships, the whole friendships, the whole businesses, the whole
communities are on fire.

Soon, logic goes out of the window.
Reasoning won't work, and good manners are hard to come by.

In other words, this "tipping point person's" QUIET ability to destroy, to create jhagada and to make enemies out of friends is simply amazing.

I don't know the genesis of this ANA jhagada, if indeed there is a jhagada. But I wouldn't be surprised if -- assumig there is a jahgada -- someone there can actually
be identified as this kind of a "tipping point person", the one who has escalated
tensions among colleagues, within the group and basically put the whole
organization on fire, so to speak.

On a personal note, in 2001, after reading a book called "The Tipping Point" by Malcolm Gladwell, I to came to understand MORE clearly how a certain "tipping point person" -- instead of bringing friends together to solve problems and to work through their differences -- destroyed friendships, turned friends against friends and created
bad blood in 1998.

Wiser now, these days, in any group I am a part of, I make sure that we have an organizational structures in place -- often informal, humorous structures -- that can immediately DIFFUSE the tensions (that can be) escalated by just such a tipping-point person.

Just received a message on my mailbox about ANA which also seems to be posted at this location:

Since it was publicly available and came to my mailbox, i decided to share it with you.
This particular message does not provide any indication of "Ethnic Rift" in ANA. May be there is something else going on.
