hi all, I finally got to see the movie Numafung..it is a great movie...perhaps the best Nepali movie I have ever seen. I absolutely loved the little sister..the bajai was adorable too. If they are showing it in your town, do not miss the chance to see this magnificent movie. "But most importantly, the fundamental extraordinariness of this film lies in its amazingly sensitive treatment of women and the lives they live structured by patriarchal norms of society." -Seira Tamang ( http://www.himalmag.com/2002/november/review.htm) Totaly agree !! PS: If you are like me, you may want to take some tissues with you :-) |

So do see this movie and you will learn something about "the Limbu Culture", even though not all, to some extent. Yeah I have to agree with Lawoti n Amina. Nabin Subba did give us one of the BEST movies ever made in Nepali movie. After seeing this movie I really can say that Nepal does have lots of talents. Dialouges are simple and witty. |

Numafung - This movie is definitely inspiring and of international award winning status. Just watched it in Minneapolis - Thanks to the people that organized it and drove 12hrs to bring it to us. And most of all THANK YOU Nabin dai for thi movie. I think Nabin dai has definitely absolutely stamped a visionary imprint in the International film world with a movie that is distinguisably Nepali. Not only for Nepali movie standard but internationally, it is definitely avante-garde. The movie is sublime with refinements in the Nepali movie industry that has set the presence for plots with substance and meaning, structured and engrained in realism but yet with the finest touch. Nabin dai has captured the richness of the Limbu culture with the backdrop of the lucious homeland in a masterful design. As in the name Beautiful flower, this movie is definitely a beautiful flower that breathes fresh life. |

Indeed, a great movie. Its worth every penny. For the parents of young kids, its worth paying for a baby sitter for a couple of hours. After "Paraal ko Agoo", the best Nepali movie ever made. Good Leap away from those bollywood infulenced, our kollywood movies. Good Job Nabin Dai. And Lawati Bro... you rock...not paparazzi bro..dont' listen to them... tuck singh is bad |

Definately one of the best nepali movies I have seen. The generation gap is well potrayed by using limbu dialect used here. The make-up and costume design is well done and are very realistic. When Numa gets married to a richer family, she starts wearing sari (whereas previously she wore lungis). The nepali culture is depicted in an excellent format- pati parmeshowr. When some of the men try to murder Numa's second husband, in spite of her hatred toward him, she saves his life. As the director himself mentioned, this was not one of the movies that was adopted from Bollywood. I thought the ending was an adaptation from "basai" which most of you have probably read because it was one of short novels that was a requirement in Isc. Beside that, I thought the movie was original. Before I go on about the movie, I will end with -a well-made movie which touches the viewers heart! |

I, and perhaps many like me, are interested in the behind the scene kind of story from Mr. Subba. - What was the inspiration? Is it Basai? - How did he go about accumulating the cast? - How did he fund the project? - How did he go about distributing the movie? - What was the process behind it? - What are his own interpretation behind the roles and characters? - Is there any specific thing in the movie he finds striking? - What interesting things he discovered while making this movie? - etc. etc. etc. Thanks. |

If you have a taste for 'art movie' and you were waiting for a Nepali art movie since Paral ko aago and perhaps Prem Pinda, then here is a well done movie for you from a very young, aspiring and intelligent director, Nabin Subba. Numafung is a well done Nepali art movie. Nabin Subba has experimented with a daring realism in this movie. The realism is so intact that sometimes you will feel like you are watching a documentary film. But it is never boring. And the most important thing is that there is not even a single preaching word from the film maker's side, yet it is obvious that it is a daringly critical movie, critical of unjust costume and tradition of a janajati in our country. Nabin Subba rightly claims that in the current highly politicized environment of identity awareness of Janajati in the country, he could not have dared to make this movie, were he not from the same Janajati. This movie carries historical and social importance. But that is not the only reason you should not miss the movie. This is a fine piece of cinema art and you are going to enjoy every bit of it. And if you have ruined your taste bud by watching senseless kollywood and bollywood movies one after another, you have a chance to take a break and rejuvenate your sense of cinema art by watching Numafung. Nabin Subba has repeated the experiment of using non-artists actors as done before in The Caravan. And he has been amazingly successful. Yes, if he had been able to use finest actors for all of the characters (which is probably a wishful thinking in Nepali cinema at the moment) and few additional work on the main story, he could have produced a masterpiece of the worldclass cinema. But I am positive that Nabin did a very good job by avoiding using over-dramatic acting prevalent in the mainstream cinema of Kollywood and Bollywood. It would have ruined his cinema. Nabin has succeeded bring out from all the people playing the role of major characters, Numafung, her little sister, parents, husbands, enough acting to make it look natural. Numafung and her little sister stand out both in the role and acting. Numafung reminded me of that famous Chinese actress (what's her name ?) and the little sister, she made me wish she were my little sister. But I was most impressed (and I think most of the viewers will not notice it) by the artful way Nabin Subba presented that old lady in the role of Numa's gramma. That amazingly believable gramma keeps spinning the handloom effortlessly, murmurs dialogs in the native language without ever looking at camera, do things in her own movement. And everything looks perfectly natural and authentic. For this single thing, I would grade Nabin Subba as an extremely mindful director. And there are a lot of things the minute details of which shows just how much serious and careful Nabin was in making the movie. The scene and scenery are also equally impressive. He has chosen a really good and authentic location. You have to watch the movie to see it by yourself. Talking about the scenes, there are many unforgettable scenes. The glimpses of the wedding ceremony in the yard and that serpentine mourning procession on the slope of a hill was, how can I put, just breath taking. They stopped my heart. You should try too. Go and watch the movie when it comes to your town. My friend reports the turn out in DC was disappointing. But it was amazing to see in Nabin the same enthusiasm and willingness to interact with the people, no matter what. I think Nepali cinema has a realistic possibility of a bright future unless we dampen the spirit of Nabin Subba and many other Nabin Subbas. |

Numafung is one of the best Nepali movies I have ever seen. The movie is simple and flows smoothly till the end. I almost cried when I saw girls playing Yeti yeti paani& ghagge rani, a popular game amongst girls in the eastern hills. Deurali lai phool-pati chadhaune dekhi after fight rakshi ra kukhura rakhera sir uthayera milne jasta samajik kura haru yo movie ma samabes gariyeko chha. Dhan-nach and chyabrung-nach are the foundations of the rai/limbu culture especially in weddings and hat-bazar. Even though Im not a fan of commercial hero-heroine dance, I really wished he had a professionally recorded dhan-nach song and the steps for dancing. Same thing goes with the chyabrung the drums. Another thing I noticed is that the dialogues are in perfect Nepali without an accent, which is not the case in reality. The ending is a bit dramatic, everything else is so real and the scenes are breath taking. If Nabin Subba can produce this kind of movie in his third attempts, we should really anticipate more quality movies to come ahead. A brilliant job. Go Nabin Subba! It was very disappointing that only about 20 people made to the show from the whole DC metro area. :( |

It is truly sad that only 20 people made it to the screening in DC area. I am not aware of what kind of effort the organizers put in to publicize the event in DC, but the people organizing it in NY thus far have been doing a poor job of marketing the screening of the movie in NY. Many people that I have talked to do not even know about NEMAFUNG being screened--not even the people who are normally in the forefront of Nepali art and culture in NY. If the organizers in NY are reading this, please be advised that you need to do a lot more in terms of publicity--you still have about 2 weeks! Thank you! |

Here is what organizers did to publicize the event in DC metro region: 1. Distributed flyer on all major Nepali community events 2. Boardcast the event four times from Sagarmatha Televison 3. Published the event in the inside front cover of INSIGHT magazine and distributed electronically (community mailing list) and in hardcopy 4. Announced 3 times via community e-mail list 5. Announced to Presidents of all GMU student orgnization and asked them to forward to their members There might be more creative stuff we could have done to attract additional audience but this is all we could do with the time we had. We suggest NY to advertise on some mainstream media as well. Sagarmatha Television is boardcasting the news of the event with film clips and Q&A session on coming Sunday at 9:30AM. We will post the clip after the convention. Thanks. |

Poonte, DC ma 20+ organizations chhan. bhasan garne ra aasan grahan garne tham ma matra aauchhan ooniharu. Ke garne. I'm just wondering if the venue was the reason for such a low turn out. Most other Nepali movies are screened at nearby movie theatre instead of university hall. May be the organizaers were trying to use the less expensive (?) hall but it seems the location matters. Some people I spoke to said they didn't come because they were under the impression that the movie was in limbu language. But, stinky movies shown in the past is the big factor. |

So please NYCers, make sure nobody gets confused about the language when you advertize. |

Bayan garera saadhya chhaina tyo movie ko. Ke bhanam? maathi sabai le bayan gari sake...maile ni bhandaa redundant suniyela. Anyway, all I can say right now is that it was absolutely worth the wait! to anyone else who hasn't seen it yet, please, please, please DO NOT MISS THE OPPORTUNITY if the movie comes your way. Of course, I did find some flaws in the movie too (nothing is perfect, anyway)--like the abrupt transitions (which, I think, were smoother in MUKUNDO, another Nepali art movie released few years back), and the not-so-natural acting of some of the actors/actresses. But, hey, this is Nabin ji's only third attempt in making movies, and most of the acting crowd were not professionals. Even then, it is certainly remarkable that NUMAFUNG has stood out as one of the best Nepali movies ever! I especially liked Lojila (bahini)--not only her role in the movie was terrific, but she backed it up with excellent acting. And she's only a young child! Grand ma's acting was also very natural. Cinematography was superb! Two problems at the show not related to the movie makers: 1. The screening was a bit off--not that many of us needed it anyway, but the English subtitles were missing at times, which might have been a problem for some non-Nepalis present at the show. 2. Kids!!!! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr I think it was very inconsiderate of some of the people bringing their young kids to the show. "Nepali movie ta ho ni...chali haalchha ni" bhanera hepya jastai garera upadre bachaa haru lyaune movie ma. I can understand that some of the parents may have been forced to bring their kids along with them (some of us can't afford baby sitters), but I think they should have just taken their kids out once they started to act rowdy. I mean, at one point, the theater was literally like children's play ground! Chichyaune, ufrane bachaa haru...and the parents totally ignoring them! Kasaile kehi nabhanne ke feri...haami Nepali haru sahrai sahansil! maile ta atti bhayesi...waited for a transition period, so that people wouldn't miss any movie dialogue(s)...yetrai sidhi bhanera "KA-KASKO BACHA HARU HO...SAMHAALNUS NA, YAAR!" bhanera karaai diyen...ani tespachhi ali thiik bho! It was also a pleasure to meet one of the Sajhaites for the first time there. |

x-Tirmer Sorry to have disappointed you w/ all these postings. But as far as the film coming to Australia its not going to happen anytime soon (meaning next 2 or 3 months) for the following reasons. 1. There is only one print of Numafung w/ Englsih subtitles - independant movie - no money, etc. 2. Numafung's tour in the US is not complete yet. There are atleast 7 or 8 cities that want to showcase the movie and maybe even few reruns. Canadains have approached us too. Guess it makes sense to wrap up things here and then move on to other regions. 3. Nabin dai's plan to come to Australia got cancelled because he has lot of work to do in Nepal. The film is being released in Nepal in August so he will working like a dog for the next few months. Hopefully the film will be liked in Nepal as well and the expenses of the film will be evened out. If that happens we can eagerly wait for his next film. Hope this will clarify things up for you. so just a littel paitence OK? |

hope there is more than one print in the back store. u don't wanna wear out the master print...that would be a disaster! yeah, about DVDs, hopefully its the best print ever to come out of nepal with excellent sounds. the producers surely accumulate a fair bit of sum from its marketing. nowadays, they should think about personal DVDs, VHS market too. i believe its a good turn out. and can reach wider population. but having seen all the movies come out of nepal, i have only one thing to say, please for god sake, spend some investment towards the quality of print and sound of DVDs. we (custormers) are ready to pay a decent price for it. GOOD MOVIE DESERVES BETTER TAKE-CARE. hope i will want to tresure the movie for my movie library collection. and that's the bottom line. thnx lawoti ji. |
