Lagaan is a new movie(musical) made in Bombay. I think it is among very few movies made in Bombay that appeals to people from almost all sections of life. It shows plight of people living under British rule in India. And it also should tell us how lucky we were that we weren't ruled by others. Lagaan means tax, and the story is about the struggle by a group of villagers in a drought-stricken land in one principality in Empire India, where a capricious and cruel British officer asked the locals to pay double tax in the year when they were suffering from drought. After watching the movie, I became more proud of our ancestors that they bravely resisted the expansionist advancement of the colonialist Britain. No British could ask for tax in Nepal. The farmers didn't have to pay tax at all even in Rana rule.Ranas collected taxes from businessmen, and looted the local resources to some extent. They didn't start any development work either. But we were a lot better than those poor people of Champaran who had to give more tax in their most difficult time. A lot of people in Terai region of Nepal watch Hindi movie avidly. I am not among them, but I watch some 'hit' movies.I think Lagaan is probably one of the best movies to come out of Bombay. If a Nepali watches the movie, he will surely thank his ancestors for doing a great job of protecting the boundaries of Nepal.

Namaste Biswoji, The best movie to come out of Bollywood, in my opinion, is "Hey Ram". I liked it a because of its symbolism. Watch it when you have time. Its worth it. Trailokya

Dear Trailokyaji: I've heard of it, but haven't watched yet. Thanks for your suggestion. The best two Hindi movies I ever watched were Kamalaa and Salam Bombay. They are really good movies.
