Friends @ INSL, Thank you for posting the notice and the tentative program of the Literary Festival at ANA convention. The program looks fine. I do hope that with your experience enriched from previous festivals, you will be organize it much better. Nevertheless, here are few minor suggestions from my side. 1. Since there are so many forums and activities in the whole convention, you must keep in mind that the majority of the initial audience would not be the loyal lovers of Nepali literature. So you will need a 'hot' program right at the beginning to keep them inside the hall. If you start with a 'cold' program, they will start leaving the hall one by one. Case in a point- the program of pustak bimochan in 2002 festival failed keep our own kabayatri of the house, NK, stick in the hall for the remaining program of the poetry recital. So, I think you should start with the poetry competition/recital for the adults. It can be followed by the children's competition and then pustak bimochan at the end. If some hot names like Samrat Upadhyay are attending, it won't be a bad idea to use their names for publicity. 2. The categories of the competitive and non-competitive poems may be important for the competitors and the judges, but definitely not for the most of the audiences. Therefore, there is no point for their separation. Mix them up like they do in the Rashtriya Kabita Mahotsav in Nepal. 3. There is a saying that says, "it is not the position but the disposition that impress people." Not the sweetest words but true. What I am getting at is the host of the program. A good host is the most crucial factor for a successful program. A good host should not only be well versed in the literature, but also have other qualities of the showmanship- humor, wit and ability to handle situations that might develop unexpectedly. I know it is not easy to find all qualities in one person and we often have to settle down with the best available. However, it is worth searching the better. 4. I am sure there will be a lot more people willing to recite their poems than that you could accept for the time allocated for the program. And some may just get inspired by seeing others reciting their poems. Also, people might wanna listen more poems from some poets. If it looked good, you might wanna organize one more poetry recital program for probably a smaller but more loyal audience later on over how about wine, cheese and candle light in a cosy room ? These are all I could think of at this time. ********************************************* Dilasha, My dear friend, and going by Paschim's meaningful remark, one of the four hottest ladies of sajha, how could I ever waste my golden chance to meet you when you have such kind words for me ? If I fail to show up, it will be only for the reasons beyond my control, hai ? And if that ever happened and you decided to be upset, I will appeal to you to read the following sher, one of my favorite, but forgot the shayar who wrote it. Mein hun ke haalaat ke tufaan me tinke ki taraha Meri majboori samajha mujh se khafaa hone se pahle |

Thank you Nepe ji for your valuable feedback. We are happy to know that you and Dilasha ji will be participating. We are looking into all of the points you mentioned. GOOD NEWS. We will be organizing another poetry/muktak/gajhal recitation at one of the mountains of Denver as many of you have requested. Details will be provided at the Literary Festival. |

what about prose? |

on 23-Jun-03 01:36 PM
Prose ? Like what ? Essay, story, novel ? I think the major factor is the time taken by each presentation. Anything that can be presented in 2-3 minutes can be done. So I think, for example, ultra-short stories, ultra-short essays and even ultra-short novel (I have seen a novel of 1/2 page in length !) of , let's say, 100-200 words would be a do-able idea. Hoina, Prabin ji ? Or you have something else in mind ? On a related note, I wonder where do people put stand up comedy in ? Just in the category of performance art ? Or, can it also be considered as a genre of literature ? I think both. In that case, how about organizing stand up comedy by INLS ? There is no dearth of comedians, humorists and satirists in our own Sajha, no ? By the way, anybody preparing Naatak saatak ? |

Like Nepe ji said prose should not be a problem if they are short. We would like to remind again the due date to submit your entries for both competitive and non-competitive category is June 30th. So, please e-mail your literary creations to - literature@inls.org by the due date. In order to promote comedy/Naatak etc, we formed a Theatre Coordination Committee last year but the committee has only been able to run couple of cultural programs so far. We are planning to talk to DC based DK ji for help on this. We have recently heard his experience and background on this area. If anyone else is interested to join the committee and work on promoting Nepali Naatak etc outside Nepal, please contact us asap. |

Oh gosh Nepe ji, that's simply flattering although I know Paschim's bad habit of exaggerating. :) so anyway, contrary to what "Literature" ji surmised, I won't be participating in the kabita ghosti however, I will try to persuade my poet friend from MN Uttam Adhikary to recite a few of his beautiful poems. And yes, I very much yearn to listen to our talented kabis and kabiyatris like Nepe, NK, Gandhi ji and many others recite their poems who have embellished Sajhapur many times hence it would be a delightful opportunity. Stand up comedy would be fun too I guess. I'm sure sajhaites like Deep ji, Jira dai, Poonte dai and others could very well fit into the category. I think Poonte dai could very well handle a one act play, couldn't you Poonte dai? for I know and have heard a lot about your khoobilities. la la Poonte dai, puraskaar tesai paundaina, esto sunaulo mauka pheri pheri aaudaina tesailey palla gharey chameli ki amaa le bhane jahtai "chadai nai bichaar puraunu paro babu"!! ************************************************************** Nepe ji, Hasraton pe rivaajo ka sakhta pehraa hai, Na jaane kaun si ummeed pe jaake yeh dil thehraa hai, Meri aankhon mein se chhalakte hue yeh ashk aur gam ki kasam; Aapke ghazal sunne ki khwahish.... Bahot gehraa hai... Isee liye aap aa jaao yeh guzaarish hai meri ; Shaayad muje, aapka ghazal, sher o shayari aadat si ho gai hai... :) |

In response to: >News for WASHINGTON Community >News Date 13-Jul-03 05:02 PM >Subject: 190th Bhanu Jayanti Celebration and International Nepali Literary >Best Book Awards winner announcement in Washington D.C. > -http://www.sajha.com/sajha/html/newsdetail.cfm?itemid=490 >...Bhim Prasad Regmi, election officer also announced the newly elected >officers of INLS for year 2003/04. Puru Subedi, Kamala Sarup, Gopal Regmi, >Sameer Khakurel and Kiran Sitoula were elected as President, Vice- President, >General Secretary, Secretary and Treasurer respectively... It will be a slightly belated note. However, I haven't have a chance to congratulate the newly elected officers of INLS. Together with others, I particularly congratulate one of our Sajhaites, Puru Subedi ji, for being elected for the second term as the President of INLS. Puruji, having known you through my close friends and about the time, energy and enthusiasm you have invested in INLS during your last tenure and before, I don't think anybody else deserves more than you do to be elected again. So here is my sincere congratulations and best wishes for another successful tenure. Kamala Sarup is a known name in Nepali literary society. Kiran Sitaula's active participation in all social activities in DC makes him very visible person. So are Gopal Regmi and Sameer Khakurel. Mature and gentle Regmi ji and young and enthusiastic Sameer who also happen to have rich literary family heritage are indeed pleasant faces in INLS. My best wishes to all of them. Ghazalkar DKji said Sameer made an impressive attempt to compose a ghazal on the spot in Bhanu Jayanti. I hope he does continue with that. Talking about Ghazal, it turns out Kabi Ramesh Khakurel, the winner of the best literary award of INLS, has created wonderful ghazals too. DKji had a luck to listen to some of them from the charismatic Kabi ji himself during a short drive with Kabiji's family after the program. One he partly remembers goes like this (may not be the exact words !) Maobadi le raat, prahari (?) le din........ ................................ ... luteko chha (s)tana (?) bhari nil daamai nil daama manau tyahi maatra kasaile kuteko chha Gharpaluwa kukur haru baandhieka Jangali baagh khulaa chuteko chha Awesome ghazal ! I hope Khakurel ji continues to enrich Nepali ghazal with the credible literary standard that only he can bestow. Finally, once again, congratulations to all of the newly elected padadhikari haru of INLS and thank you for the programs organized in Bhanu Jayanti. |
