Now that Nepal is a more recognizable entity, articles on Nepal gain more notice. Check out this article on the cover of Boston Sunday Globe of June 24, 2001

In Nepal, a new Red Army emerges

Yep, Maoists have gained a lot after the regicide and arrest of
Kantipur folks. Thanks for the link.

While glamorizing women who like to kill and a bunch of terrorists who are bent on destroying Nepal, the Boston Globe forgot to mention that thousands of Nepali children are being forcefully recruited to fight this mindless war. Perhaps the article should have been titled "Child fighters gain rights."

I've read in various places (such as The Economist, and now the Globe) that Nepali women have no property rights. My impression has been somewhat different. I've understood that women have no automatic right to inheritance (unless they're 35 and unmarried), but that a woman can inherit property if it's stipulated in a will. I would imagine, then, that a woman can in fact own and control property, enter into contracts, and so on.

If that's right, while women obviously have minimal and utterly inadequate property rights, it wouldn't be strictly accurate to say they have "no property rights," would it?

Can anyone clarify this for me?

Dear Sally:

Women are entitled to the property of their parents if the parents
want to give them. No one[brothers, esp] can stop the parents from
giving their property to the daughters.

However, although sons can sue to get the inheritance, daughters
can't. That's the main point of descrimination.

Daughters also inherit their parent's property, if the parents
don't have any son.
