The court finally settles on a much debated and awaited case of affirmative action regarding an admission policy at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
--------------------------------------------------

Here's an excerpt from the university released statement--

In victories for the University of Michigan, the Supreme Court of the United States today (June 23) upheld the right of universities to consider race in admissions procedures in order to achieve a diverse student body.

In two lawsuits challenging University of Michigan admissions policies, the court ruled 5-4 in favor of the Law School and, by a vote of 6-3, reversed, in part, the University's undergraduate policy, while still allowing for the consideration of race in admissions.

U-M President Mary Sue Coleman responded to news of the court's decision:
This is a tremendous victory for the University of Michigan, for all of higher education, and for the hundreds of groups and individuals who supported us, Coleman said. A majority of the court has firmly endorsed the principle of diversity articulated by Justice Powell in the Bakke decision. This is a resounding affirmation that will be heard across the land from our college classrooms to our corporate boardrooms.

I keep seeing all this stuff about affirmative action as it applies to college...some thoughts.

1. Minorities are called minorities because there are LESS of them.
2. AA derides the abilities of qualified minority individuals. Those who are qualified should feel cheated by those who abuse the system.
3. Some schools are diverse and some aren't. Stop trying to make all schools have the same amount of minorities.
4. College admissions should not be based on race at all. There should not be any check box or points awarded because one is a minority.
5. If it is shown that a particular racial group attends college less than other groups (by percentage), then there is no reason to inflate the numbers.
6. People should be independent and stop relying on gov't programs to bail unqualified people out.
7. Racial equality=equal opportunity for all races. That does NOT mean you give special preference to a minority student/applicant. It means you treat everyone the same

I realize that there are still some individuals who do not recognize racial equality, and that is why the system is in place. However, we can't make these generalizations. Affirmative action has to stop.

AA is unconstitutional and the supreme court is completely wrong for upholding it. The 14th ammedment says that discrimination is illegal, and just because some gov't moron called discrimination Affirmative Action doesn't change the fact that it is discrimination.

Few days ago I had chance to listen to a Jewish gentleman, he was saying if the current system of education continues in US high schools and student visa becomes more liberal the whites will need affirmative action to get into Universities. Per him there is no way US trained students can compete with Asian (mainly Indian and Chinese) students.

Any thoughts?
