The UK asylum crackdown has prompted the government to change visa regulations for a further 16 countries.

All travellers from the countries involved were already required to get visas to visit Britain but now they will have to be in possession of the documents just to pass through an airport on their way to another destination.

The changes apply from midnight on Monday and apply to Albania, Belarus, Burma, Burundi, Gambia, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Moldova, Nepal , Palestinian Territories, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sudan and Vietnam.

Home Office minister Beverley Hughes said: "We are determined to take all necessary steps to ensure the integrity of our borders.

"Unacceptably high numbers of people are refused leave to enter the country when they arrive at our airports and some may go on to make unfounded asylum claims.

Grace period

"The ability to travel to the UK without a visa when claiming to be on the way somewhere else is a relatively cheap and easy way to circumvent our immigration controls.

"We are tightening up our procedures to put a stop to this abuse."

People who had already made travel plans on or before 23 June will still be allowed to travel until 28 June.

The grace period will also apply to those on the return leg of a journey begun before Monday.

Thanks for the info.

How about people with US and Canadian Residency? Do they need VISA as well to pass through?
thapap Posted on 24-Jun-03 12:29 PM

nirvana jyu,
residency has nothing to do with this. it depends on your nationality i.e. the passport you carry.
Nirvana Posted on 24-Jun-03 12:40 PM

Not really thapa jyu,
I think some European countries for example: Switzerland will let you travel through if you have US or Canadian residency with any nationality i.e. the passport you carry. If you don't have US or Canadian residency then you do need a VISA.

nirvana jyu,

u r right. Swiss does allow for 3 months [90 days] stay for people with US Green Card.

IN uk scenario:

to determine your eligibity.

It does say you would need it even for TRANSIT.

Funniest thing,
Nepal requries Direct Airside Transit Visa.

They have online application thing. After fillin' couple of pages of information, they have a drop down menu for something like "country of nationality". Nepal is not freakin' included in that menu. So, if you need visa turantai, you have to go to british embassay ASAP re.. can't do it online if you are Nepali. phew!!

Okay, British Airways, no more business from me!!! May you be grounded soon!

I can live on without transiting through Heathrow...

I guess though that this new visa measure will hit Qatar Airways more than it will affect BA, since a lot more people fly with them traveling between the US and Nepal.

Btw, does anyone know if Canada still has the same rules? Last time I was going to fly Cathay Pacific from JFK to Hongkong I was supposed to get a Canadian visa because the plane makes a refuelling stop in Vancouver. Ridiculous...

The only way we will be able to earn more respect is by voting with our wallets. Please fellow Nepali citizens, join me in the boycott of British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Easyjet, and British Midland....
