Poontedai,
Kyo ho yesto chala? Ghar ma bhauju bhai bhai kana pani kina yesto ukhar maulo bha ko han? Maiyanani lai massage gar dine re? Yesto ke sunno paryo hare...maile ta Poojyu lai ek nari brahmachari bhan thaneko thiyan.

In jest.

But on a serious note: I heard that for a large segment of the ANA participants, the conference was a kind of a meat market...a place where prospective grooms and brides came to find potential partners (maybe also for casual dating...aka malish ko nimto, ahem, Poodai listening?) without having to go all the way back to Nepal to find a spouse. Is this true? Anyone know of any marriages that happened due to the ANA jamboree? I think this is a serious sociological phenomenon that needs a serious look into. Maybe some enterprising undergrad could do a thesis on this...with lots of participant observation thrown in to lighten up the drudgery of social science research!

What interests me here is that for a majority of Nepalis here in the US, marriage is the last bastion of their nationalism and culture. They might enjoy Hindi music, French cuisine, American designer clothes and get paid by a global company, but when it comes to a spouse (of course they might have a fling with a firangi now and then), they want to go to their roots? Why? Any comments are welcome!
bhenda2 Posted on 26-Jun-03 11:26 AM

I enjoy hindi music, nepali cuisine, nepali friends, but stil married to Firingi...and its been pretty fun!..khoi afno afno choice ho...

maiyanaani Posted on 26-Jun-03 02:40 PM

Good point Suva Chintak.........but you see you can have funa nd party and like whatevr you want but true when it comes to marriage it's better to choose and stick to your own kind than any other culture or origin. There are lots of advantages:

1. Same religion-same beliefs hence no fights
2.Same language -better communication
3.Same food- Nepali khana best in the world - YUMMY
4.Same culture-Nepali men are more understanding and caring than kureis for fact.Less fights concerning $$ and women:) Stable home and life
5.Our kids will have a solid foundation of Nepali culture, hindu religion and values than be like ABCD.
6.Divorce- hardly a question- same beliefs marriage is for keeps and not hopping!

You see ther are lots & lots od advantages for sticking to your own kind. It's less problems and smooth ride than marrying some kurei........;)

Hey Maiyanaani I respect everyones opinion except you should never label your opinions as Fact. Excuse me while I clean up my vomit after reading your statement, Nepali men are more understanding and caring. Can I have your address so that I can send you an invitation to the real world. Not all Nepali marriages are perfect. What about the silent high level of domestic violence and infidelity among these understanding and caring Nepali men? There are advantageous to different culture marriages too. You get to learn a lot about different types of people and their cultures as well as them learning yours. Having an open mind is a beautiful thing.

bhenda2 Posted on 27-Jun-03 11:20 AM

Chick pea is very right.
gharmigirl Posted on 27-Jun-03 11:32 AM

Hey Chickpea--you say it best, I think. I read Maiyanaani's "facts" and can only think of my bahini whose Nepali husband is a real chump. I am betting my bahini would like to switch her husband who drinks too much, who openly visits prostitutes, who doesn't help with children for one from a different culture who respects her and respects marriage. It is my belief love has no boundaries and people who love each other are bound to create a stable homelife, regardless of the ethnic backgrounds of the partners. Just because two people speak the same language doesn't mean they don't or can't have communication problems. also where are these "more caring, more understanding" Nepali men when their amahs try to rule over their wives and turn them into family slaves?

and divorce hardly a question---phew---doesn't mean marriage are all happy so much as married people who don't get along are stuck. and if Nepali men think marriage is for keeps, then why so many Nepali men leave wives, both american and nepali wives, when soemthing more exciting comes along?

Chick Pea, thanks for keeping this honest.
bhenda2 Posted on 27-Jun-03 12:01 PM

gharmigirl you are right too..
bhenda2 Posted on 27-Jun-03 12:14 PM

To Gharmigirl,
o Gharmigirl, I am not trying to be rude... but I am so shocked to see the difference between this posting and the above posting....how on earth did you improve you English so fast?

o chick pea--i say tell amerikann girl truth about boyfriend so she not marry with him. she sad now a little. after marry adn then husbnad leaves after status, too much sadness. it not right what he does to her. if she like nepali boys then maybe she find one who really loves her. not cheater boyfriend who using her for own benefit.

Pls let me know if I am mistaken..
maiyanaani Posted on 27-Jun-03 06:58 PM

wow...different strokes for different folks people. I am not saying other cultures are bad or anything just when it comes to marriage i think nepali..sticking to your own kind is the best- my opinion :)

marrying kures and kurenis - i have seen their life (meaning my friends' lives). It is so hard to adjust to thei culture and values.

Yeah now there are good and bad people in all cultures. That does not make ALL nepali men bad or ALL kure bad.
gharmigirl Posted on 27-Jun-03 07:02 PM

bhenda2--thanks for noticing improvements! Improvements did not come fast, but slowly with much help from American didi and addiction to english novels.
lotus Posted on 28-Jun-03 04:38 PM

I think allllllll NEPALI men are very dominating..Well not alll all but..some..I hate that..:(
knt Posted on 28-Jun-03 05:04 PM

Then do you girls like someone who's passive and tame and mellow? If that's the case, then I am So available. I am very quiet, have a cute face, and am very ready to treat my prospective girlfriend as a princess. Now my mother is the house leader, and my dad is the follower...so you know where I get this subservient gene from.
