Oli advises tainted leaders to stay away from movement

Post Report

KATHMANDU, June 29 : KP Sharma Oli, an influential leader of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist, today said the ongoing joint movement launched by the agitating political parties against the "regression" has not gained success, as it has been led by the "corrupt leaders".

"The joint movement has not attained success as corrupt leaders are leading it," Oli said while speaking at a programme organised here by the Madan Bhandari Memorial Academy, on the occasion of the 52nd birth anniversary of late Bhandari, the then UML general secretary. The CPN-UML is an active party to the joint movement launched on May 4.

"Besides, the movement lacks agenda and vision, leading to a loss of faith among the people," Oli said.

Adding further, Oli said, "Those implicated by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) and the Judicial Investigation Commission on Property (JICP) should not lead the movement."

Giving his prescription for taking the ongoing joint movement of the political parties to a new height, the senior UML leader stressed that the core issue was the settlement of the Maoist problem. "The Maoists have expressed their maximum flexibility and the government, all the political parties should make the best use of this opportunity," he added.

He also demanded that the leaders of all political parties, who are responsible for the current political chaos, should publicly repent their mistakes.

Hinting at the party general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal, who had registered his candidacy for the Prime Minister at the kings call, Oli said that he did not believe in such a "claim-letter" for the PM.

He claimed that the revival of the dissolved House of Representatives, as demanded by the Nepali Congress and the formation of an all-party government, as demanded by the UML, would not resolve the current political crisis. "It is merely a strategy to achieve power," Oli said.

Flaying the parties current demands like limiting the royal titles to only the king, queen and the crown prince, Oli said that the parties demands should be able to address the issues raised by the Maoists.

Speaking on the occasion, Chakra Prasad Bastola, central member of the Nepali Congress, said that the movement would restore the peoples sovereignty, seized by the kings October 4 move.

Bimalendra Nidhi, central member of the Nepali Congress (Democratic) demanded that the Sher Bahadur Deuba-led government be reinstated, to resolve the current political stalemate.

Similarly, Chitra Bahadur KC, chairman of the Unity Centre (Masal), said that there was no basic difference between the Surya Bahadur Thapa government and the previous government, led by Lokendra Bahadur Chand. "Thapa and Chand are both the oxen of the king," K C said. He reiterated the demand for constituent assembly in order to draft a new constitution.
