Hi all, Tripple Gurung and his wife Ramyata -- good friends fo mine -- have put together a plan to promote Nepal's Manang Zilla (or Tilicho Lake, and many other attractions) as a tourist destination in and of itself. Their campaign is titled "Destination Manang 2004". I myself will be visiting Manang in October for a number of days as a Nepali visitor. Would urge all of you -- Nepalis and non-Nepalis -- to think seriously about visiting this beautiful, remote and so far Maoist-free Manang Zilla. oohi ashu ktm, nepal ************************** Introducing Manang Over the Himalaya is a hidden valley. Surrounded by the 8,000 m Annapurna range and the great peaks of Pisang and Chulu, the valley is wild and wonderful. Tibeto-Burman people who followed the nomadic tradition of moving across the mountains, hunting and searching for food, found the valley and settled in it centuries ago. Today, the upper Manang or Nyeshang Valley is home to an age-old, relatively-unaltered way of life, evident in the Valleys many monasteries, its numerous festivals, and the hardiness of its people - skilled itinerant traders who call themselves Nyeshang. Destination Manang 2004 will showcase the best and most beautiful of one of Nepals remote and northernmost districts. It was here that the Tibetan saint Mila Repa meditated, where the worlds highest lake is situated and where endangered species like the elusive snow leopard and blue sheep and hordes of yak roams. Manang, situated in the Nepali trans Himalaya, boasts spectacular mountain scenery, vibrant colors of nature, wild flowers, herbs, tranquil lakes, and plenty of outdoor adventure opportunities. Special packages like a snow leopard watch, religious pujas, climbing courses, mountain biking and marathon competitions, and heli treks have been developed for 2004. A number of new peaks, recently opened by the government, and new destinations like Nar and Phu, the northernmost outposts of Manang on the border with Tibet are added attractions. Destination Manang 2004 hopes to revive traditional Manangi festivals like the Badhe. Although it used to be celebrated on a grand scale every three years, the Badhe has not been celebrated for the past decade, owing to migration of the local population to urban areas, and lack of economic resources in the villages. But most important for the campaign, local villagers have expressed a keen interest to promote sustainable tourism and are working to this end with the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP). Organised by Manang Youth Society, a non-profit group run by young professional Manangis working for the improved and sustainable livelihood of the people of Manang, Destination Manang 2004 is supported by Trekking Agents Association of Nepal and the Annapurna Conservation Area Project and promoted by Nepal Tourism Board. 1. While neighboring Dolpa is so much infested with maobadi, how can Mangang be claimed as maobadi free Zilla? 2. In my lifetime (but not in 2004), i would like to visit Manang. but, for most Nepali domestic tourism is still a luxurious good. If any non-nepali is visiting nepal and seek some ideas about places to visit there, i will recommend them Manang in their wish list. 3. Visit Manang 2004 campaign would be successful if it has been widely advertized in travel related media, etc. Hope, Manang Youth group has done good job advertizing the campaign. |

Ashu ji, Thanks for promoting domestic tourism! Don't know if I can make it in 2004 to Manang but since my visit to Jomsom some years back, I always wanted to walk the Thorongla pass( between Mustang and Manang?) and visit the Tilicho taal. Mountain biking?? sounds adventurous to me, would love to give it a try if my health doesn't fail me.:) along with the wealth, :P Do you know about Marche? Where does it lie, in Manang or Mustang?? Marche is the famous place where people flock to drink fresh Yak blood for medicinal purpose during shrawan bhadra. Oh! the list to tour within Nepal is still long.
