Ladies & Gentlemen, I am bringing you an update on the ana convention that is happening in Denver, Colorado. As you know, it is happening in Marriott Hotel at DTC (Denver). Yesterday was the first day of the convention, rather should I say evening? Because the event started from the evening, though the organizers have been working on the arrangements since some time. Today many people participated in the forums and poem festival during the day and enjoyed the talent show in the evening - extending into the night. I must coment that it does take a huge deal to organize such a series of events and I appreciate the commitment of those Nepali individuals who contributed for the success of the events that have finished and that are still to come during the next few days. The Poem festival was well.........guess ../.......... Yes boring! I did enjoy what a couple of guys had to say but their enthusiasm carried them too far, I think! But overall the event was ok. The Cultural Program was quite good to say the least. It was interesting to see the young...very young ones that were able to sprout their talents in an environment that isn't too conductive - I would think. But surpassing my expectation, they did very good. The maithili dance by a young girl (kid) was the winner and she deserved it too. Though she got some tough competition. It was surprising that not too many young boys (kids) could be see on the stage. May be this has to do with mothers staying at home and dads going to work, which is also common among the Nepali diaspora. I Didn't appreciate the loud banging that was called music by a group of guys from Denver. May be, I'm not just into it! I was hoping to spot some sajha hotpots at the convention but couldn't locate anybody beside puru subedi (at the poem festival). And You never know whom you may meet. I got together with a couple of guys whom I hadn't seen for a while. Let's see what the next two days bring. |

Sure we can start up a boy band. The formula to create one is quite easy. There will be 4 memeber: - The flamboyant homosexual who keeps refusing he's gay - The dumb one who tries to act smart in interviews - The youngest one with a girlfriend and 4 kids - And the alcoholic who likes beating his wife I'll take the alcoholic wife beater. We need to fill 3 more slots. |

Booring! Last night's performance in the so-called comedy and cultural program was Booring. It was worse than the amature cultural program just a day earlier. And yes, it was rowdy too. It was just offensive. Do you like Sudamsu and his type? If yes, you might have appreciated it. As for me Nabin K. Bhatterai and Mamta Dip Bim were the only two whose performance was worth the money. Maha's second one (Prahasan!) was good. As for the rest, they may as well have decended from hell to torture us (and with our money too :-(. The program was loooong. When will the organizers learn not to have a 6 hour program at one go. Honestly why do these organizers expect us to endure torture after torture at these kinds of programs? Limit 3 reached the limit of harashment by again banging away at our ear drums (again after their bad performance at the cultural program) a day earlier. I had to leave the helish scene after limit 3's limited attempt at music the second round!! The announcer's had risen from ash to make our evening as unenjoyable as possible. They seemed exhausted and yet succeded in their attempt to withdraw our digestive juices from our stomach after a good meal at the party, earlier in the evening. Will I ever sit through another one of that show? Nop. |

Mr. Gore, Each artist sang more than 4,5 songs. It would have been appropriate if Kunti sang just her 'mathi mathi sailun ge ma' number. That number was good but she had already bored us by singing the rest of her songs. The show started more than 20 minutes late and people without tickets were entering the hall like it was their dad's backyard. There wasn't enough seats (it appreared!) and almost a hundred or so people were standing at the back. The amature performance was cheaper yet much superior than this one. adieu! |

For latest update on ANA convention, visit www.nepalipost.com. After reading the updates, I think I made a good decision not going to Colorado. We Nepali meet once a year, get drunk, beat some people and go to jail. How pathetic..?? It is known few Nepali players beat a referee in Denver, cops had to provide special security at the ground, even few Nepali were taken into custody by the Denver cops. One group also tried to held demonstrations against singer Nabin Bhattarai. It is very common in gatherings in Nepal but the same after coming all the way to USA..?? Cant we change our behaviour. It was really shamefull reading the updates. Shame on we Nepali people. |

I join Jaya_Nepal, to denounce the bad behavior shown by fellow citizens of Nepal in Denver. If this convention was supposed to improve the relation between nepalis, how come ANA organizer fail to avoid such incidents. The games played there seems to carry too much weight on personl dignity of the peoples from particular region, rather than taking it easily it as a social gathering. I think that the organizer so sort out the tipping point perons and solve the problem. It seems the organizer did not have enough "real honest" volunteers. GP |

People, It is kind of a cultural thing you know. Convention is the wrong word for the ANA jamboree, I think a lot of Nepali, especially the youths take it as a 'mela' or 'hatiya' that we had back home. Such occasions are a forum for a lot of nach gaan, khan-pin, jaand-raksi and the inevitable display of male aggression and violence. We have to understand that similar aggression and sexual access exists among the chimps, our close ape cousions. In that tribe, the tough guy gets most of the gals, and the way you prove you are big shit is by beating the shit out of the competition in a public spectacle. Believe it or not, some of the Gorkhey boys, when their adolescent minds are under the influence of the good cheer, still think they will score with the girls with this kind of rowdy displays. The females of the Gorkhey tribe, having moved out of the jungle eons before their males, would rather be entertained and attracted by a nice poem, a piece of painting, a song, or just some sweet nothing! So, the ANA officials might take into considerations the social-psychology of the average Nepali adolescent when they organize the next mela in Arizona. In order to reduce the rising level of violence and aggression, perhaps they need to dedicate one session to peaceful dating rituals. Two cents from my Human Evolution 101. |

Yesso ramro khabar ni paam na! I am sure there were hundreds, if not thousands, of Nepalis gathered at the convention, out of which, only a handful of thugs must have gotten drunk out of control, beat up some other Nepali, or beat up a cop and got locked up! I know we must not hide our contradictions--we must reveal them, talk about them, and try to think/dicuss hard about possible improvements. However, if we submerge all the good things that might have happened at the convention under a few things that might have gone berserk, we will never learn to appreciate the beauty of having such conventions. Let us not stereotype the entire Nepali community to the misbehavior of a handful of hooligans. I mean, someone must have made an excellent presentation at one of the forums, performed marvelously at the show(s), and/or, at the least, people must have had a terrific time catching up with old friends and meeting new people. Let's hear them! |

Highlights of ANA, Denver? Hmmmmmmmmmm..!! Personally, Numafung and Art exhibition. Everything else was "thumbs down". As for the show on saturday, A BIG FLOP. Dohori by MAHA was the worst ever sattire piece they ever came up with. (whats up with all those guys throwing dollor bills at stage, HINT HINT: its not a mujra or a strip joint) Second skit by MAHA "London Airport", didn't they come up with that few years back? Track singing is not my cuppa tea. Its not worth paying $$ to listen to singers on tracks. I would have loved it if they had one band and one individual singer performing rather than bunch of singers singing on tracks. ( Buyer Beware, if you plan to attend their show in your city) It was sad to learn that only about 120 people (out of approx 2000 registered??)paid to watch the movie Numafung and not a single art piece was bought. I wish I had few spare dollors to buy one. However, I do intend to buy one once I become financially stable (hope soon). Forums and Poetry: Sorry folks, I couldn't attend. (wasn't interested + schedule conflict) Sports: Refs beating. I don't think that is accurate. I didn't see anyone hitting a ref the whole time I was at the soccer venue (plus, someone would have been in jail if that was the case, no such news). The team in concern and the ref had issues after the ref called off the match. Phoenix, AZ, 2004: Who would want to be in Phoenix in July? Not me. |

Shefu Gurl I totally agree with you. I had MAD fun no matter what people say. It was so nice seeing you, Proud, Baller, Donny, San dai, Anish, Rusty and all the Boston Gangz. I do miss the lobby and the Bar and remember the guy in the marron shirt???? PRAK _ _ _ ko kura gareko kya Shefu I know who you are talking about when you said "nepali guys they drink so much and they get into fight and next day when we tell dem what happened they give us lame excuse saying i was drunk sorry didn't know. ani hoina jhagada garyo thik cha ani feri angrezi ma bessari mukh chadnu parne kina sabailai sunaune garne." No Offence to anyone but I did enjoy the cultural program, especially the first day. I didn't say for the whole thing on second night but all the performers were great and they did their best. All the ogranizer and volunteer worked very hard. I know coz I'm one of the volunteer. Organizing a CONCENTION with thousands and thousands of nepali is such a tough job and I think I speak for all the organizer and volunteer when I say we did our best. The amature dancer was great. Agelia Pradhan was great and she did deserve to win but the others were not bad either. WARI JAMUNA PARI JAMUNA was great, that was one of my favorite one. I think many people enjoyed the show and part of the convention. Of course drinking goes on and on everywhere nepalis people meet but it all for fun. I don't think anyone had intention to get arrested and and get messed up. San dai I had blast hanging out with you and the Boston Gangz, Oh yeah San dai I totally forgot to take pictures so can you send it to me through e-mail. You were taking your camer everywhere so you must have bunch of pictures. Anyway over all ANA was great and I enjoyed it a lot. I got to be with people I love the most and I got to hang out with all my friend and all the people from sajha. Thanks to who noticed me and came and talked to me. Lets see how the next ANA goes......... P.S Shefu I do agree with you when you said the hardest part was saying goodbye, you have no idea what I went through yesterday. Sorry gurl I missed you and couldn't say good bye. STONEFREE I missed you too. Looked everywhere but didn't see you around. . . . . . . . . . . . |

Interesting comments... I attended the convention for the first time and I had a blast. I guess it all depends on with what frame of mind and expectations you attended it with. It was really nice to see so many Nepalis from so many different walks of life and places together at a place. Games were fun. Hope nothing bad came out of the so called brawl. I definitely agree cops shouldn't have been called. I am sure it wasn't sth that couldn't have been handled. The talent show, movie, cultural show .. all were fun. It was also refreshing to see so many pretty nepali gals at one place.. |

I really enjoyed watching basketball and soccer though BOSTON >:( didn't make it to the finals.
