Maoists plant explosives

Kathmandu, June 28: One of four pipe bombs strung up in Machhendra Bahal in Kathmandu overnight was detonated by police bomb disposal squad on Thursday morning at 09:30. The explosives are wrapped in cloth and hung by string below an electric transformer pole. They appear to be booby trapped, and one of them exploded with a loud bang when police tried to defuse it. No one was hurt and the bomb squad is trying to defuse the other explosives.

Police have cordoned off the area near Indra Chowk which is a lively vegetable market every morning. The explosives appear to be the work of Maoist rebels, and a banner denouncing King Gyanendra and Prime Minister Girija Koirala is still hanging on the electricity pylon. The banner also
demands that the government scrap its new Public Security Regulation. Nepalnews/kd
