How much cash can a person bring with him/her while migrating from Nepal to USA? I know there is a limit and you have to declare the value of your belongings and the cash you're carrying at the US customs, but I wondering what the maximum limit (for cash) is. Also does this limit include the amount in traveller's check?

Also, any ideas where I can get an official answer from? Thanks for your response.

Kirsten,

Nepal Rastra Bank regulates the foreign currency transaction in Nepal, contact them for the latest exchange limits. For US you can get the information from US customs department, their website is - http://www.customs.ustreas.gov , if this site is not of much help then try US department of State or US department of the Treasury.

I think there is no restriction on carrying any sum of money into or out of US, however one must declare if he is carrying currency or monetary instruments (checks, drafts, and traveler's checks) in excess of $10,000. I still advice to check with the authorities just in case things changed.

Happy Migration!!

It seems that the maximum amount that Nepal rastra bank exchanges is $2000. Isn't this ridiculously low for a person migrating to the US?

security desposit for a 1 bedroom apartment in a decent suburb= $800 ( one month's rent)
one month's rent = $800
food = $300 (per month)
miscellaneous = at least $1000 (per month)
total = $2900 (per month) -each month until not settled( have a job etc)

How is one supposed to survive even for a month in the US with $2000??

Kristen....if you still got some time you should look for a room mate (if you are NOT immigrating with your family at this point). Living in city is cheaper than living in suburbs. If you want to live in suburbs you will also need a car in addition to an apartment. You will get stuck and it will be very inconvenient for you if you dont have a car and still wanna live in suburbs. Living in city will remove this inconvenience until the things settle down as the city buses and trains are readily avalible in most US cities (however I dont have much idea about small cities cuz I have never lived in small cities).................chao...have a great time in the LAND OF THE FREE.
