If you have been using peer-to-peer systems like KaZaA, Morpheus, Gnutella, Grokster, Imesh, LimeWire, Bearshare, Aimster, WinMX and eDonkey to download songs, you may want to rethink it.

Even users sharing just 8 music files are being targeted for lawsuits. Check the following link and rethink your music sharing practices.

I have a question about this. What if you download music, but don't share them? Are you still in danger of getting sued?
Ki-Ra Posted on 21-Jul-03 03:11 PM

I think RIAA is looking out for ppl sharing too much and have lots of traffic to and from their IP. I dont think they'll go and sue each and everyone doing P2P file transfers. They would rather flood it with fake songs and stuff.

They just came up with a new P2P software that is more secure than things like Kazaa and other P2P software that has spywares in it. They even had this thing on news pani ho kyare. on CNN.

But it's still in it's beta version and has a crapy design and couldnt find too much files either.

So the thing is, I'll be worried more bout RIAA's agents sending fake files with trozan and virus on files rather than getin sued by them. :p

When you're downloading music through the P2P softwares, someone is sharing his/her mp3 with you which is illegal. Also, the downloaded files are saved in a folder the files in which are always being shared while you're online using those softwares which is again illegal.

You could be thinking what if I copy all those downloaded files to another folder which I don't share as soon as the files are downloaded...oh well..

Hyaterika, go to "Option" on Kazaa, and click on disable file sharing with other Kazaa users. In other words, if you click on this check-box or whatever you call it, you'll only be able to download songs, but you'll not be sharing them.

RIAA will take 2191.78 years to sue everyone

By INQUIRER staff: Tuesday 29 July 2003, 10:31

READER MICHAELA STEPHENS says that if the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is right and that 60 million US folk are file sharing, it's going to take the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) a mighty long time to get round to them all.
She said: "I pulled out my calculator to see just how long it would take the RIAA to sue all 60 million P2P music file traders at a rate of 75 a day. 60,000,000/75 = 800,000 days to subpoena each person or 800,000 days/365 days in a year = 2191.78 years to subpoena each person".

Michaela points out that it's unrealistic to suppose that the RIAA will have any money left in 2191 years, and she even wonders whether the trade association will exist then.

Plus, she points out, given the rate of tech advancement, it's likely that we'll have moved on to many different types of music media in even a hundred years.

She continues: " So let us consider more realistic numbers. The RIAA plans to sue thousands of file sharers. Working in increments of 5000: 5,000 people/75 subpoenas a day = 66 days How are they going to keep track of all these lawsuits going on? 10,000 people/75 subpoenas a day = 133 days or about 2/3 of a year.

"Keep in mind suing 10,000 people is still only going to impact only one six thousandth (1/6000) of the file traders out there. And who is getting rich off of this? The lawyers. Betcha not a single musician will see a cent of this money.

"15,000 people/75 subpoenas a day = 200 days (1 out of every 4000 affected) 20,000 people/75 subpoenas a day = 266.6 days (1 out of every 3000 affected)

"When might this actually start affecting us? When 1 out of every 10 is affected? That would mean they'd have to sue six million people. That would take,...(6,000,000/75 = 80,000)... 80,000 days.. or 219 years! They'd have to sue our great grand children!"

RIAA Hit List

The subpoenas are flying, and we're naming names. Are you on the list?

By Tech Live staff

The recording industry has launched a sweeping effort to identify and shut down individual song swappers, making good on recent threats to expand its legal battle against copyright theft.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has now issued more than 911 subpoenas to Internet service providers across the United States, trying to get the names of people still offering music on file-sharing networks such as KaZaA and Grokster.

Today, "Tech Live" brings you the RIAA Hit List, the user names of file traders targeted in the recording industry subpoenas.

Last month, we brought you the story of Jesse Jordan, a 19-year-old college student who became one of the first to be hit with a lawsuit by the RIAA. Jordan settled his case by paying $12,000 to the RIAA.

The following user names were culled from subpoenas filed with the US District Court in Washington, DC. All subpoenas, incidentally, are being served by the Los Angeles law firm of Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp. A total of 253 RIAA subpoenas were listed as of July 22 through the federal court system's paid online database, PACER. The actual subpoenas are available to view online in about half the cases.

The court documents don't show individual users' real names. They do show file-sharing network user names, the user's ISP, the user's IP address, and a sampling of copyright songs the user allegedly made available for download. To date, many ISPs have been contacted, including Pac Bell Internet, SBC, Charter Communications, Comcast, Adelphia, RCN, and Time Warner.

Following is a list of user names we found during our review of the subpoenas. Also, see the Electronic Frontier Foundation's searchable database of RIAA subpoenas, and its information on how to avoid a lawsuit.
