Some of you may know Sahadev Poudel as someone who ran a Nepali radio program for half-a-day in New York City earlier this year. [I had posted news about that here on Sajha.] Well, Sahadev, who finished his year-long theater-related training at Vassar College in New York, is back in Kathmandu. Yesterday, Saturday afternoon, a friend and I went to see Sahadev's Improv Threater in Baneswor, and came away quite impressed with Sahadev's initiative and leadership a nd group work. Harihar Sharma, the noted theater actor, was the guest of honor. Sahadev invited audience members to share tiny exerpts from their lives, and a couple of people did share their stories. Sahadev and friends then acted out the stories immediately right in front of everyone. No script. No prior rehearsals. Just making do with a few props to act out the audience ko stories in believable forms. It was brilliant. I wish Sahadev and team all the best as they take this method of "Playback Acting" to other parts of Nepal, and act out many, many stories of Nepali audiences to provide entertainment, humor, relief, consolation and joy. There is a show this (Sunday) afternoon too. oohi ashu ktm, nepal

>No script. No prior rehearsals. Just making do >with a few props to act out the audience ko >stories in believable forms. It was brilliant. Sounds quite interesting ! Best wishes to Sahadev Podel ! I can feel, depending upon the talent and dedication of the artists, it's going to be a hugely popular theatrical phenomenon in the towns and villages of Nepal. Instant theater ! I never thought about it before. I wish I could be a part of it. Ashu, thanks for sharing this information and your own enthusiasm for the development of theater works in Nepal.

Thanks Nepe for your words. Sahadev's New York-trained approach to Playback Theater can also be used for therapies, in that such a theater form extracts even intimate, deeply buried stories out of the audience members, and has them performed right there and then in front of all. From what Sahadev told me, this form of theater is popular with psychiatrists and others in the US. On another note, in business circles, I read these days that academics are studying the process of making strategies, and finding it similar to the spontaneous method of impov theater. Rosabeth Moss Canter has written a few articles on the theme of business strategy as improv theater. That said, there's another theater workshop in town. France-trained Shova Chand is offering a week-long theater working at Alliance Francaise, starting today, Monday. Plus, on coming Saturday, Soaltee Hotel is putting on a show by Mumbai theater artsists called: "The Good, the bad and the googly". oohi "your theater correspondent :-)" ashu ktm, nepal
