KOL Report KATHMANDU, Aug 12 - American Senator Dianne Feinstein recently wrote a letter to Ministry of Foreign Affairs assuring that she would reintroduce a bill in the US Senate Finance Committee proposing a quota-and-duty-free access for Nepali garments to the American market. According to a high-level government source, Senator Feinstein has written that she would move the bill to the Finance Committee this September. The bill once approved by the Committee would go to the Senate for final endorsement. Senator Feinstein had withdrawn a bill tabled by herself from the Senate Finance Committee in early June protesting Nepali governments move to deport 18 Tibetan immigrants back to China on May 31. A high level Nepali delegation led by Foreign Secretary Madhu Raman Acharya visited Washington last July to persuade the Senator to reintroduce the bill. Nepal-made garments are currently subjected to an average tariff rate of 18 per cent in the US, which absorbs up to 80 per cent of the garments manufactured in Nepal. (snn)
