I know for sure that there are few Nepali guys doing their Master there. I don't think undergraduate. I used to live in St.Louis and I would see them once every year, but I'm sorry that I do not know any of their number. I'll try to look into it.
I've been there and it's in the middle of nowhere. I think if you do live off campus, it might be quite far since there's no town around the campus (I mean it won't be TOO far). Some of my friends lived in a house which was quite away from the campus and they all used to live in a single house.
I'll bet you that you'll definetly find someone, Nepali there within weeks.

At one point of time there used to be a Nepali family in SIU Carbondale. The mother was doing her PhD whereas the daugher was doing undergrad double major EE. It was about 3 years ago. But I am not sure if they are still around, though.

Have you thought of contacting the International Programs Department of SIU? Normally they are very helpful and give out the contact information of the attending students OR they would take your name and contact info and pass it on to the Nepalese students there. If I were you, this is what I would do. And good luck for your school.

Anamika had the most pertinent suggestion. Everyone should contact and give their information via International Programs department if there is one otherwise the graduate school or admission who can circulate your info with others, whenever you are going to new school.

As I understand SIU used to be hub of Nepalese in USA during 70's no more now due to high cost. Education department. The PhD student someone referred here was in Education as I know.

Also, there is a professor called Dr. Jack Graham, who is very very friendly and helpfule to Nepalese community. Ask the international program to pass on your informatin to him. He will definitely hook you up with Nepalese there.

If not then you can get help from International Student Association (also through International Programs). They will pick you up and you can crash with anybody for few days (who cares if they are from Uganda or India). You don't have to stay in any 'Patel Motel', common.... Send the extra money to San to maintain this website.

This is the best part of being students.
