Hi all,

Could you plz. give me some feedback on following questions?

1)The song, "Gairi khet ko sirai halyo" by asha bhonsle from the movie prempind, will you call it a contemporary or a traditional nepali song?

2) How would you explain about it to someone who is unaware about nepali culture? Would you say, "it's a song where a young nepali gurl is singing about Nauni, marsyangri river, fisherman, love, frist love lost, rainy season, morning and evening?"

3) And what is the english name for the bird nauni? or is it even a bird or something else? were is it found?

4) where does the marsyangri river flow? In which region of Nepal? Where does it start and where does it end?

5) What all instruments are being played in this song?

6) And how would you explain the nepali instruments in english? For example, Maruli (a famous nepali flute made out of bamboo played by the shepherds in the hilly areas?) Ok this was just an example, how would u describe it? Like madal ( a famous nepali drum?)

7) And sarangi (a famous nepali violin?)

8) What does Gairi khet mean? Is it some kind of field?

9) What month is shrawan? Is it the rainy season month? does it fall in spring, winter, summer or fall?

10) And what would be the translation of the verses "Gairi khet ko sirai halyo, barsayam ko karauti ley.....Nauni jasto mero mana, chira paryo."

If you know an answer to any one of these mind bogging questions of mine, plz reply. I will really appreciate it. Don't hold back from posting ur answer coz u might think it's irrelevant to u...remember something that means nothing to u...might mean a world to someone else in need! Sharing is caring!

I hope you all will take some time to answer if you know any of the answers.

Thank you so much for all your help.

Thanks,
G_I.

and oh, what is this kind of tune called?
phoenix Posted on 24-Aug-03 01:06 PM

Hmm very interesting queries i should say. These things never struck my mind.
Don't know too much but i think "nauni " is a kind of ' ghiu'.it's not a bird ....it's actually a pure form ghiu .hamro pooja haru garda purohit haruley nauni ghiu use garcha.aba ghiu lai ke bhanney...butter? margarine?
Probably the literal translation is " my heart is so pure like nauni ghiu ! hehehe i'm bad at this.
About the instruments i guess you could say they are the nepalese folk instruments and forms of the western musical instruments you've mentioned. A kind of 'a far cry ' from their imagination
GI are you gonna dance with some non nepalese frens in this song at your school? if so , it's gonna turn out real good.
sorry couldn't be of much help
CHEERS :)

Gairi khet ko sirai hanyo is a contemporay song (adhunik geet) by yadav Kharel.

Nauni= butter

you explain it as a girl's expression of love: how love affected her life or something..

I don't think you can really translate the names of the instruments used, but, let's try:

madal (hand drrum)
murali (flute)
sarangi (nepali version of violin with 3 strings) ** (Kalanki bro, correct me on this)

maile janeko yatti ho.

IF
not that big of a music fan

The Months of Shrawn is in Mansoon season. When its July here, we have sharan in Nepal. They do not have Mansoon in Amriaka. Sometime Mansoon season represents a growing girls innocent exuberent sexuality. In Mansoon farmers grow crops.

Gurl_Interrupted (or Ms. Angelina Jolie),
1)The song, "Gairi khet ko sirai halyo" by asha bhonsle from the movie prempind, will you call it a contemporary or a traditional nepali song?
----> I would consider it Traditional

2) How would you explain about it to someone who is unaware about nepali culture? Would you say, "it's a song where a young nepali gurl is singing about Nauni, marsyangri river, fisherman, love, frist love lost, rainy season, morning and evening?"
----> Its a song where a young Nepali girl is singing about how a young man has captivated her heart and how his seeming love has just penetrated her heart like Cupid's arrow.

3) And what is the english name for the bird nauni? or is it even a bird or something else? were is it found?
----> Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No-- its butter (as others pointed out)

4) where does the marsyangri river flow? In which region of Nepal? Where does it start and where does it end?
----> I don't exactly know, but I think it flows from either Bagmati anchal, or Gandaki anchal, and ends in Narayani anchal (after mixing with Trisuli)

5) What all instruments are being played in this song?
----> Panché Bàja (Madal, Sarañgi, Muràli,er...some other instruments...even I wanna learn what)

6) And how would you explain the nepali instruments in english? For example, Maruli (a famous nepali flute made out of bamboo played by the shepherds in the hilly areas?) Ok this was just an example, how would u describe it? Like madal ( a famous nepali drum?)
----> Just as you said

7) And sarangi (a famous nepali violin?)
----> Just as you said

8) What does Gairi khet mean? Is it some kind of field?
----> Yes. A kind of field. Have you heard about Terrestial farming, where hills are divided into planks...or something like that...like the steps of ladders, but WAY bigger. I think you get the point.

9) What month is shrawan? Is it the rainy season month? does it fall in spring, winter, summer or fall?
----> Let me check my Nepali Calender...YES...July/August (Summer's end-- typically South Asian monsoon.

10) And what would be the translation of the verses "Gairi khet ko sirai halyo, barsayam ko karauti ley.....Nauni jasto mero mana, chira paryo."
----> OK-- I am bad at translating stuff, but here goes nothing:

The top-most part of the farm has been hit with rain's gentle arrows,
Like a butter is melted, my heart has melt because of your love (like Cupid's arrow)

This song can be roughly compared to the song "Like a Virgin" by Madonna.

Hope all this writing (not exactly héhéhéhé) helps!

uhhhh... Gurluuuuu!!! Do you have kleenex on you? Pashina pushna paryo!!!!
phew!!
I give up!
The only thing I knew about that song was "nauni" was butter.
Rest? I give up!! Nepe hazurr, where are you?

answers to the question number
1. Umm, I personally call it a movie song, a song created for the situation in the movie and it doesn't really fall in any catagory. Pure 'shambhujeet banskota' fusion!! Although the song is really good, it sounds more like 'gharko na ghatko'.

2. I give up! (Sitara jyu, where are you? lol)

3. nauni is not a bird, but butter. ;)

4. Marshyangdi nadi flows somewhere in Nepal. (GP, Chiple bro, Biswo HELP!)

5. Okay, I had never listened to this song like the way I just did.
hmmm... funny thing, they never play "sarangi" in the song... the one part, where it sounds like sarangi is actually an Indian instrument called "Esraaj". The song starts with murchunga (ryaaiyau ryaaiyaau effect) and then santoor (which is an Indian instrument), flute (ummm... the only instrument that sounds like pure NEPALI). Even the rhythm is the combination of Dholak and faint maadal effect and chukchuke (moracus pair), and occasional strumming of guitar. There are lots of other instruments played here and there in the song. Like keyboard in the second interlude... eh!, even sharod (again Indian string instrument). keyboard is used through out the song in the backgound (Kill me if shambhoojit banskota used violin in the background). Hmmm...

6. If you are describing all the instruments played in this song to any of your Indian friends, then beware!!
Remember the song was recorded in Bombay, and probably arranged by some Indian musician.

7. No sarangi in the song... :(

8. ummm pass.

9. srawan (saawan ka mahina, pawan kare shor ni aba). hehe..

10.ummm passs....

Aaafu le thapako tyatti ho... aanch!!!

1)The song, "Gairi khet ko sirai halyo" by asha bhonsle from the movie prempind, will you call it a contemporary or a traditional nepali song?

** Kalankisthan ji has a valid point. The music is from a movie. I haven't seen the movie but I would guess the song probably is filmed to suit the scene or situation in the film. Yadav kharel, a veteran writer, wrote the lyrics. I think Mr. Kharel, who is a dedicated writer to Nepalipan, tried to write something typical nepali. He may tried to give the song a traditional touch but it isn't. It's a modern song with interestingly both traditional (not folk) and contemporary touch.

2) How would you explain about it to someone who is unaware about nepali culture? Would you say, "it's a song where a young nepali gurl is singing about Nauni, marsyangri river, fisherman, love, frist love lost, rainy season, morning and evening?"

**The song basically expresses a person's deadly encounter with passionate love.

3) And what is the english name for the bird nauni? or is it even a bird or something else? were is it found?

**The crude translation of nauni is butter (as many have suggested). whisking curd (dahi) (for a while) will separate the nauni (soft like foam but solid prodcut) at the surface from mohi (liquid). Once you heat the nauni, you get ghee.

4) where does the marsyangri river flow? In which region of Nepal? Where does it start and where does it end?

**Marsyangdi flows through Gandaki zone in western Nepal. Probably merges with Narayani (or Trishuli ?).

5) What all instruments are being played in this song?

**See Kalankisthan's response.

6) And how would you explain the nepali instruments in english? For example, Maruli (a famous nepali flute made out of bamboo played by the shepherds in the hilly areas?) Ok this was just an example, how would u describe it? Like madal ( a famous nepali drum?)

**You already have got the answer.

7) And sarangi (a famous nepali violin?)

**I think you got it.

8) What does Gairi khet mean? Is it some kind of field?

** Gairikhet is some kind of field. Right. (see south's response). Gahiro ko khet is gairikhet. Just a common field name in Nepali villages (in the mountains/hills).

9) What month is shrawan? Is it the rainy season month? does it fall in spring, winter, summer or fall?

**It's a rainy month (often is synonymous with rainy time). July?Aug.(shrawan or saun splits in two months) sounds reasonable.

10) And what would be the translation of the verses "Gairi khet ko sirai halyo, barsayam ko karauti ley.....Nauni jasto mero mana, chira paryo."

It's not barsayam ko "karauti" but "Draudi". Daraudi is another river in the same region. So, the words literally (in rough translation) mean "Terraces in low deep area are being hit by raging Daraudi of rainy season, my nauni like (pure and tender) heart is being cracked by his shaw like personality (appearance). the person (let's say a girl) is comparing his presence with the raging Daraudi and herself as a shy, pure, and tender girl who is pretty much overwhelmed by his approach. Or, "his presence is sweeping her off the feet".

I may have sounded terrible but this is what I could come up with right now. pardon my bad and lousy english, GI.

HEY , BARSA YAM KO DARAUTI LE HO KI KARAUTI LE HO???? I THOUGHT KARAUTI LE.
Gunaraj Posted on 24-Aug-03 11:11 PM

"Gairi khet ko sirai hanyo& barshayam ko Daraundi le& Nauni jasto mero mana&.chira paryo& usko rup ko karaunti le"

This song from Movie Prempinda is a traditional song. In this song a young lady explains how badly she has been affectionate to some handsome guy. She compares of her heart being taken away from her (my soft butter like soul/heart is shattered by the saw of his handsomeness) with the sweeping away of most fertile lowland by a raging flood of nearby river (the irrigated lowland is swept away from its top by a raging Daraundi river).

This entire movie is based on a triangular love story between a rural girl, a fisherman and a high class person. The love between the fisherman and the girl flourishes in the banks of Marsyangdi river (that flows as through Lamjung, Gorkha and Tanahun districts in Gandaki zone and later merges with Trishuli near Mungling). (There is also a tale that there are no fish in Marsyangdi River). Daraundi is another river that flows through Gorkha. Seti (Setigandaki), Kali (Kaligandaki), Madi, Marsyangdi, Daraundi, Budhigandaki, and Trishuli are the tributaries of what we call Narayani River.

Gairi khet is the lowland field that is the best choice among all PADDY FIELDS. It has no problem of year round irrigation and has higher productivity than other upland/seasonally irrigated fields. Being at a strategically important (and vulnerable too) place, it has higher probability of being inundated. Once there is flood, Gairi khet is most likely to be affected. [Gairi khet ko shirai hanyo when the top of gairi khet is hit by a flood& it's all gone for good]. We have monsoon in the months of Ashadh, Shrawan and Bhadra. Therefore, we have much flood case in the middle or late monsoon. It's a rainy season, which you can compare with summer.

I don't know anything about musical instruments. Kalankiji has explained it very well.

"nauni jasto mero maya x 2...... chira paryooooooo"
translation: " butter like my love x 2.... tore apaaaaaart"
makes more sense... don't it g_i
khai ... i'm not too good with understanding these nepali songs... some are pretty straight forward though like " haareeeyo dandai ma aundai chyappa samaudai x 2..... "
now try making me understand nepe's gazals... geez " kaaaaalo aakchar bhaisi barabar"
g_i getting back to ur song... i can't seem to understand the dance choreography either... tyo " chira paryooooooo..." bhanda kina hola heroine le khutta chyatne? ...
in this context, i'm as lost as u are too.
