Dear All,
I am doing research on cell migration, which is a major step for metastasis of cancer. We have found a gene that is required for this process. Removal of this gene causes the cells to be left or stuck in a tissue of their way. That means this gene is essential to give the direction to the cells (or to help to get migrating cells out of that tissue.

I would like to name this gene after a character from Nepal or Hindu Mythology. If you know such a character that have an analogous story to this gene - for example, if someone is stuck on somewhere- like in cave or island or forest and had to be rescued by someone. This is a nice opportunity to expose our culture in the scientific community. Thank you very much for your help.

Is this research being done in NYU? just sheer curiosity:P

I think mythical names for gene is kinda weird........GENE GANESH? :O

how about names like "gene seti, gene bheri, gene sunkoshi"? ;)
u_day Posted on 25-Aug-03 09:05 AM

how aobut we name that gene after one of our fellow sajhaite: YATRI.

I think YATRI would be an appropriate name for that gene.

GENE YATRI

HAHAHAHA
thaag Posted on 25-Aug-03 09:35 AM

I think gene Ganesh would be approptiate

There should have been some gene manipulation during placement of Elephant's
head on Ganesh. Shiva ji knew this gene science 100's of years before, So name
a gene after Shiva's creation, Ganesh!!!!!!!!
Himal NY Posted on 25-Aug-03 09:45 AM

Not bad so far. Believe or not. people often name genes after names of greek god or European Royals if they are related somehow. There is a gene named after Brahma because that gene does similar thing. Let us think more......if possible historical or mythical figures.

Raawan :=D!
dhananjya Posted on 25-Aug-03 10:22 AM

dear Himal,
congratulation. we proud of you.
ganesh name has to do nothing with gene.
gana+ish=group+leader(master)=ganesh.

if the gene is essential to give the direction to the ceels, how about "DISAK", i.e. which menas, one that shows direction.

if it is the one which help rescuing, then suitable word will be "SARAN". which literally means refuge.

congratulation again,
dhananjya
GUY Posted on 25-Aug-03 11:42 AM

How about "Che -Ten" a verb in the Sherpa language which means " SHOW" ??
Lalupate*Joban Posted on 25-Aug-03 01:21 PM

Random thoughts
1) Sudarshan Gene (short-cut for Sudarshan Chakra Gene)
2) Hanuman Gene
3) Shankar Gene
4) Mahakali Gene

I suggest Mahakali gene; it has the underpinnings of the Hindu mythology as well as Nepali geography.
Desh_Bhakta_Bhattarai Posted on 25-Aug-03 02:09 PM

I would suggest "Gene Baidéhi" or "Gene Janaki"(you could omit the accent!)

Baidehi is another name for Sita (as far as I know). She was trapped in an island (Sri Lanka), and Ram rescued her! So that name might be suitable.

Another fit name is "Gene Rambha", since Rambha-- the "Upsara" was also rescued by...I don't recall it...but I am pretty sure she WAS rescued. So, thats a fit name too, I guess.

P.S. Gurl_Interrupted...that was corny.
authentic_angel Posted on 25-Aug-03 02:20 PM

the gene shudbe name.."angel genE"..lol..juss kiddin..well i like the idea of "GENE sita"
dogz Posted on 25-Aug-03 02:23 PM

I think "Learner" would be appropriate, since he is the one who talks a lot about genes. Yeah ! Go Learner !
Prajesh Posted on 25-Aug-03 02:50 PM

What about

"Gene Mokchya" OR "Gene Mukti" OR "Gene Samrakchyak" OR "Gene Rakchyak"

If I ask my daughter she will definitely go for 'Gene Rumpulstilstkin" (please correct the spelling)

In jest!!

Congratulations Himal ji.

Trishanku comes to my mind. His fate was to get stuck in the sky, between the earth and the heaven. He was ascending to the heaven with his mortal body with the power of yajna performed by the Guru Vishwamitra. But when he reached at the gate of the heaven, Gods pushed him back to the earth because it was against the divine law to come to the heaven with a mortal body. When Viswamitra saw him descending to the earth, he stopped him in the sky with his mantra. So the king Trishanku got stuck in the sky unable to come down to the sky and unable to go up in the heaven. Read more here-

Trishanku is also quite a popular metaphor in modern Indian poetry. So it's a fancy name. The only problem is Trishanku, unlike the gene you described, reached the destination but was returned back and then got stuck on the way. May be there are better characters in Hindu mythology. Trikal jyu, any idea ?
Yatree Posted on 25-Aug-03 06:02 PM

One name comes to my mind: DhrubaTara. The star that help find direction at night.

I tried, but I can't remember the full story about it. Read when we were young in school...
Rabindra Nath Tagore has a few (?) poems on Dhruba Tara.
Himal NY Posted on 25-Aug-03 06:58 PM

Thanks. A lot of good ideas. this is really great. (Now, i wish i could find several genes to name after these suggested names.)
I will still look forward more names after historical, mythical or pure nepali words or whatever you think good. Thanks again,
Himal NY

P. S. Oysji - good guess.
dautari Posted on 26-Aug-03 12:06 PM

If you were in Nepal .. you would have been forced to name this gene GENE PARAS or .. you know
Bathroomcoffee Posted on 26-Aug-03 01:02 PM

Hey Himal why don't you use your own name instead of listening to all these morons ? Since you were involved in discovering the gene its only fair to have your name attached to it instead of someone else. Unless you feel really patriotic then put someone else's name to it. Unless the name you pick has a certain significance to the function of the gene then I can undestand. Otherwise it should be a HIMAL GENE(or your real name, or your group's name if it was a group effort).
