hi friends,

we have been discussing about the caste discrimination in nepal, which is being a rigorous issue in the country. i have a query to the people who believe on caste division as braiman, chhetri, baisya and sudra. those are the dam people, who have this belief. they do not have right to live in this 21st century. they suppose to be in the hell. so, my query is, what do you like "strike" or "strive"? if you like strive why do you keep all the doors locked to the rest of people having education, practicing religion at same place, and so many. strike is an attribute of conscience of existence and strive is an aftermath of strike. i support the strikers for strengthening their civil rights. they should approach to the "bill of rights" as in the united states of america. it will be a symbol of anti -recrimination struggle in the nation's history. god blesses them....

Dalit MP, activists held, released

Post Report

KATHMANDU, July 3 - A delegation of Nepali Dalits comprising some 28 members including MP Rishi Babu Pariyar were apprehended from Pulchowk at around 10 a.m. by the police Tuesday.

An estimated 100 protesters were heading towards the UN House shouting slogans and holding placards saying "Address Caste issue in the World Conference Against Racism (WCAR)," when the police apprehended them for violating the Public Security Act that bans protests in restricted areas.

"We wanted to convey that the system of untouchability in Nepal be included in the agenda at the UN conference," said Bijul Kumar Bishwokarma, member of National Assembly and the President of Dalit MP Group.

The delegation led by Bishwokarma was heading towards the United Nations’ House to submit a letter of appeal addressed to Dr Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations and Mary Robinson, chief of the UN Human Rights Commission, to address "Caste-based Discrimination in Nepal" during the upcoming UN World Conference Against Racism to be held in Durban, South Africa from August 30 to September 7.

Rishi Babu Pariyar, an MP was released immediately after his arrest while 28 members of Dalit community were still kept under detention at the District Police Office, Lalitpur.

Durga Sobb, Renu Sijapati, Sapna Basyal, Bam Kumari Budhamagar were among other protesters of Dalits arrested by the police.

Earlier, around 50 protesters were seen flanked by the gate of UN House bent on submitting the petition addressed to the UN Secretary General through the UNDP Resident representative, sources at the UN House said.

But the protesters were barred from entering into the UN House by the police. Following the police intervention at around 9 a.m., the activists converged near NTC office at Pulchowk shouting slogans and demanding to end caste-discrimination and untouchability in Nepal.

Though the national legislation calls for the abolishment of untouchability against scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, Dalits say they are only on papers.

Several of these Dalits complain that they have been prevented from using public wells, dining together with high castes like Brahmans and from entering the temple premises belonging to the upper castes. "We’re too Hindus but treated like any other slaves. It is an apartheid," say the unhappy Dalits.

Later, speaking to The Kathmandu Post after his release, Padma Lal Biswokarma, member secretary of National Preparatory Committee, Nepal informed that all the detainees were released at around 6 p.m.

He also said that the petition that was to be submitted to the UN House today would be submitted on Wednesday. The Preparatory Committee was supposed to submit its report today in conformity with the Asia Pacific NGO Network in which Bangladesh, India, Japan, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka will collectively address the issue of racial discrimination.

"It is a black law which purposely stopped us from presenting our most genuine issue at UN," said Biswokarma reacting against the new regulations that bans protests.

A press release issued later by Nepal Dalit Association accused the government over its undemocratic and wicked act of arresting peaceful demonstrators.

Dear Reetu:
>if you like strive why do you keep all the doors locked to the
>rest of people having education, practicing religion at same
>place, and so many.

I am not sure why you are thinking this way. Who is keeping door
locked to the Dalit community in Nepal? Mind you, I used to have
a small coterie of close friends in Amrit Campus hostel. One of
those was Krishna CK(Charmakar), from Syangja. We used to eat
together, share our foods and there was no feeling as the one you
say.

I agree that Dalit are underrepresented, but what is the solution?
Fighting with non-Dalits is not result."Striking" You said. By
striking non-Dalits, you may gain blood, but you don't get
expertise. Dalits have to work hard, and study hard to better
their situation. There is no shortcut to progress, and development
is a tough principle(chinese proverb).

As for arrest of Dalit leaders, I disagree with the govt action,
and condemn that. But, Girija government has been arresting
everybody who is protesting.Virulent speeches don't help to
create favorable environment.

hi biswo,

thanks for responding on my posting and you read the news, eventually, you got the picture of our democratic government and our constitutional right.

by the way, we young generation have an incentive to handle those stuffs nevertheless it has to be stimulated in order to tackle this social problem. you are from western part of nepal, you know better how rest of people are suffering from the social discrimination.

what proverb you have quoted i agree on it. i remembered an episode of ramayen that karna had been treated as a sudra at that time but his became a outstanding character. you know how it is painful in someone's life. you never realize those stuffs so i request you to keep your spirit as before.

god blesses the strikers of non-discrimination provokers..
