Yale Whippenpoofs, an all-men's a capella singing group from Yale University, presented a very enjoyable one-hour show last night at Yak'n'Yeti in Kathmandu -- despite, if you can believe this, a flooding in the 120-year-old Natch Ghar (it was raining very hard) and despite a power failure (which made the hotel manager bring out the candles). The Yalies seemed pretty gracious and humorous about the logistical failures, and sang songs such as: "On broadway" "Time after time" (NOT the Cindy Lauper number!) Cole Porter's "Too darn hot" (appropriate for the KTM weather), and a few others, before ending the evening with "On the Midnight Train to Georgia". And they uncharacteristcally remained on their best behaviours -- without trying to make fun of their arch-rival in Boston. The tickets were reasonably priced at Rs. 300/each; and the hall was packed largely by expats. The US Embassy and the Hotel deserve thanks for hosting the Yale group, though I wish they had publicized the event a little more. oohi ashu
