Hi all, In Kathmandu, I am volunteering one morning in July to sit on a panel with two American friends, to give a presentation to Nepalis who are soon going to the US for the first-time for college or grad schools or postdoc research. The panel's presentation will be in English and features issues about living and studying in the US. The idea, of course, is to give these students some advice re: what to expect and do. Here are some ideas I think I'll discuss with them (without, of course, claiming myself to be THE expert :-)] Since we all have DIVERSE experiences in the US, what else would you -- as a collective -- suggest/advise me to say to these fellow-Nepalis so that their time in the US as students will be all the more productive for them? Please post your suggestions/ideas here so that we can all learn from one another's experiences. I will certainly GIVE credit to this site and to those who suggest ideas when I give my presentation in about three weeks. Some topics to get the discussions going seem: Health Insurance Housing Money matters/banking What to take with you Travel to the US (and within) Communications, Phone, Post Safety matters Student professor relationships Academic advisers Writing skills Computer skills Test taking skills Plagiarism Library/academic resources Grades and GPA Selecting majors Selecting classes Doing research Internships Women in American Society Social customs in the US Dating and relationships American "personality traits", as it were. Adjusting to American society Sexual harassment Discrimination laws Alcohol, tobacco and drugs oohi ashu
