Hi all, Of late, quite a few English-language books on Nepal's Maoists have been published. All of these are available in Kathmandu's book-stores. Last Thursday, I bought four of these books [my pre-Dassain reading list, to be sure!], and I thought this info may be of interest to all of you who want to learn more about Nepal's single-most dominant agenda also known as peace with the Maoists. Book I: The people's war in Nepal, Left Perspectives Edited by Arjun Karki and David Seddon Publisher: Adroit Publishers, 2003 Pages: 494 Price: Indian Rupees 600 Contains essays by Prachanda, Babu Ram, Hisila Yami, Mohan Bikram Singh et al. Book II: Understanding the Maoist Movement of Nepal Edited by Deepak Thapa Publisher: Martin Chautari, 2003 Pages: 395 Price: NRs. 475 Reads more like a sourcebook. Contains prevously published pieces by Rishkesh Shah, Shyam Shrestha, Deepak Gyawai, Kanak Mani Dixit, Anil Bhattarai et al. Book III: The nature of underdeelopment and regional structure of Nepal: A marxist analysis by Baburam Bhattarai Publisher: Adroit Publishers, 2003 Pages: 540 Price: Indian rupees 600 Apparently this is an updated version of Babu Ram's PhD dissertation at JNU, Delhi. References are mostly from the '60s, the '70s and the early '80s. Book IV: A Kingdom under seige: Nepal's Maoist insurgency 196-2003 By Deepak Thapa with Bandita Sijapati Publisher: Printhouse, Kathmandu, 2003. Pages: 234 Price: N Rs. 350 Appears to be a primer on Nepal's Maoist movement. Materials fresh as of the January 2003 ceasefire. ***** In addition, one book I would recommend is: Mao Zedong by Jonathan Spence Publisher: Penguin ****** oohi ashu ktm, nepal

What follows is an email advertisement sent by the publisher of Book IV (above). ******************************** A Kingdom under Siege: Nepal's Maoist Insurgency, 1996 to 2003 by Deepak Thapa with Bandita Sijapati Nepals Maoist insurgency began on 13 February 1996 when members of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) carried out simultaneous raids on government offices, police posts and private businesses. The often-violent campaign that followed embroiled the government, the political parties, the king, the police, and the army in a conflict against a group of highly motivated guerilla fighters. By January 2003, the rebels campaign had come to threaten the central institutions of the Nepali state. A Kingdom under Siege: Nepals Maoist Insurgency, 1996-2003 is an authoritative and comprehensive overview of Nepals Maoist insurgency. It describes how the states neglect of many of its people combined with political instability and the growth of radical left politics in the Maoist heartlands of mid-western Nepal led to a build up of the tensions that were unleashed in February 1996. The insurgency quickly grew and gained favour with many of Nepals poor and disadvantaged people as the rebels held out the promise of a more just and equitable society. The governments failure to tackle the causes of the rebellion and to engage the Maoists agenda led to thousands of deaths and widespread destruction of infrastructure that peaked in 2001 and 2002. This book is being published during the second ceasefire of a conflict that has shaken Nepals political, social and economic structures to the core. The authors conclude that the only way to bring about a lasting peace and prevent more insurgencies rising up in the future is to build a state that attends equally to the interests of all of Nepals diverse population groups.

Ashu: I also heard that a new book (ed.) by DB Gurung (who writes poems I think) is out. It has several dozens writers from various walks of life who have contributed on numerous aspects of current Nepal, including issues related to Maoists... It has been tauted to be one of a kind. I don't have an access to it. I would love to hear your view (who the authors are and thier writings etc...) if you can share. Any noteworthy thoughts? It is about to be inaugrated soon I hear. Thanks.
