I am doing fulltime CPT for my major this semester. I was allowed to do fulltime job because my major require to do so. Can i still work on campus when i have full time job.
My international student director says that working i can't work more than 40 hrs. But isnt full time mean anything more than 20 hrs??
Please inform this ignorant psycho if any of you have any knowledge on this matter.
Thanks in advance :)

Hi dreamer,

I also thought full time meant anything more than 20 hours, doesn't matter 30 or 50 or 60 hrs. So, I thought, you should still be allowed to work on campus. Since it is CPT (more like a class) than work, I don't understand why he or she is not allowing u to work on campus. You are receiving a credit for ur cpt right? Some international advisors or Deo's or whatever u call them tend to be a bit conservative! and stingy since they are afraid they might jeopardize the status of their school with INS. Maybe U need to do some research on the net regarding CPT & IMS and send her those papers...hopefully he/she'll be a bit linient after reading them!

Good luck & best wishes.

Hey Dreamer:
Yes, you can do on campus job despite the fact that you are doing a full time CPT. But make sure of one thing, your time work hours including your CPT and on campus job should not exceed 40 hours. Thas the main issue. Hope it should help you out.

I read somewhere that international students are allowed to work only 20 hours during the semester a student is enrolled to campus. If not enrolled, for example during summer, can work full time (which is 40 hours). The same applies to CPT (full time equivalent to 40 hours). Even you have offer of multiple job, you can not work more than 20 or 40 hours in total. If your CPT employer requires you to work additional hours beyond 40 hours a week, they can justify why it is so. Exceeding 40 hours with multiple assignments may not be permissible.

International students are allowed to work only 20 hours on campus during school (Part time). They are allowed to work 40 hours during summer and other holidays (Full time). Not allowed to work more than 40 hours unless special permission from the employer and your advisor (Overtime).

But doesn't fulltime mean anything more than 20 hours and has no set limit? I thought, INS had not specified fulltime to be ONLY 40 hrs. Hm...interesting!

Full time = 40 hours per week or 169 hours per month; anything over that limit is Overtime..... needs to be paid at least 1.5 times the regular pay rate.
